- This article is about the flying move performed in various games. For other uses of the term "Fly", see Fly (disambiguation).
Flying is a move that is directly related to jumping. It allows the player to float in the air for a certain period of time. While characters such as Mario need a power-up to fly, certain enemies such as Fly Guys and Paragoombas can fly without the aid of items.
History
Super Mario series
Super Mario Bros. Special
The first game where Mario is able to fly is Super Mario Bros. Special, a sequel to Super Mario Bros. The Wing power-up allows him to fly through the air in a manner similar to the game's swimming mechanics.
Super Mario Bros. 2
In Super Mario Bros. 2, when Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool or Toad defeat a Pidgit, they are able to use its magic carpet to fly for a short time.
Super Mario Bros. 3
In Super Mario Bros. 3, when Mario picks up a Super Leaf, he transforms into Raccoon Mario, and is then able to briefly fly after getting a running start. The Tanooki Suit, a similar item, turns him into Tanooki Mario, which also lets him turn into a statue. Magic Wings let Raccoon Mario (or Tanooki Mario if a Tanooki Suit is gained while using one) fly indefinitely until he takes damage or grabs a non-flight-based power-up; clearing a level reverts his flying ability back to normal.
Super Mario World
In Super Mario World, Mario can pick up a Cape Feather to turn into Caped Mario, which gives him the ability to fly. In the same game, if a mounted Yoshi eats a Blue Shell (or a Blue Yoshi eats a shell), the dinosaur gains wings and is then able to fly around for as long as the shell is held. Alternately, the same result can be achieved if the mounted Yoshi grabs Yoshi's Wings. Mario can also steal a Lakitu's Cloud, which also allows him to fly for a while.
Super Mario 64 / Super Mario 64 DS
In Super Mario 64, Mario can break open red ! Blocks to obtain the Wing Cap, which allows him to fly for a limited time after he performs a Triple Jump or uses a Cannon to take off.
In Super Mario 64 DS, the Wing Cap is replaced by a feather, which is a power-up exclusive to Mario. Only in the VS mode of this version is every character able to fly.
New Super Mario Bros.
In New Super Mario Bros., Mario gains the ability to fly after defeating a Lakitu with a Fire Flower, who then leaves his cloud behind, as in Super Mario World. Mario can also fly for a short amount of time using the Spin Block.
Super Mario Galaxy
In Super Mario Galaxy, flying returns. Mario can collect the Red Star to become Flying Mario. He must jump and then spin in midair to begin flying for a limited time.
Another way to fly is by collecting a Bee Mushroom, which turns the player into Bee Mario. The player's flight is limited by their fly meter, changing color from green, to yellow, and finally to red as they fly. Once the bar is empty, they fall and are unable to fly until the flight meter fills up, which occurs by landing on a stable surface or by collecting Coins). The Boo Mushroom, which transforms the player into Boo Mario, also grants the ability to float in the air while pressing . Whenever the player goes through a Launch Star, he goes into an automated flight.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the player is able to fly after obtaining a Propeller Mushroom or grabbing a Propeller Block, and shaking the Wii Remote. The player can also steal Lakitu's Cloud to fly around for a while, as in the previous game.
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Flight returns in Super Mario Galaxy 2, in the same way as it appeared in Super Mario Galaxy, with the exception of the Red Star. Yoshi can also fly in this game by using the Blimp Fruit to hover for a certain amount of time.
Super Mario 3D Land
Despite the return of Super Leaves, P-Wings, and the Tanooki form in Super Mario 3D Land, the player cannot fly by using those items (though Mario and the Toads from the intro are shown doing so in the ending cutscene); Statue Leaves (which replace Tanooki Suits in this game) also don't give flight. Propeller Boxes are used to fly upward instead, like in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
New Super Mario Bros. 2
In New Super Mario Bros. 2, the Raccoon form and its flight returns, though players can fly by just holding the jump button, unlike in Super Mario Bros. 3. The ability to steal Lakitu's Cloud also returns.
New Super Mario Bros. U
In New Super Mario Bros. U, the player can obtain a Super Acorn to transform into Flying Squirrel Mario. This allows them to glide, similar to Raccoon Mario or Caped Mario. They can also obtain a P-Acorn to transform into P Flying Squirrel Mario. This grants them the same abilities as the Super Acorn, but without the need to touch the ground to continue flying, though only for one level.
Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
Super Leaves, the Tanooki form, and Propeller Boxes return in Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, acting as they do in Super Mario 3D Land.
Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS / Super Mario Maker 2
In Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and Super Mario Maker 2, the Super Leaf and Raccoon form, Cape Feather and Cape form, and Propeller Mushroom and Propeller form return in the Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. U styles, respectively, working as they do in the respective games. Lakitu's Cloud can also be stolen or placed standalone in all styles (bar the Super Mario 3D World style), and the (Fire) Koopa Clown Car (Junior Clown Car in the New Super Mario Bros. U style) works and is available similarly.
Super Mario Odyssey
Certain captures in Super Mario Odyssey allow Mario to fly, like Paragoombas and Glydon.
Super Princess Peach
Super Princess Peach features the Joy vibe, which allows Peach to fly.
Wario: Master of Disguise
In Wario: Master of Disguise, Wario can turn into Wicked Wario. The player must then blow into the Microphone to make him fly.
Yoshi platform series
In Yoshi's Woolly World, its 3DS remake and Yoshi's Crafted World, Yoshi can enter Mellow Mode to fly easily.
