A Big Star, as it appears in New Super Mario Bros..

In New Super Mario Bros., an item called a Big Star can be found in "Mario vs. Luigi" mode (a two player DS-to-DS version of the game). In order for a player to win, they must collect the set amount of Big Stars required to win that stage.

In the settings for the game, the host player will decide how many Big Stars are required to win the battle. Also at the top of the upper screen, the amount of Big Stars a player has is displayed above his or her character.

One player can make the other player drop Big Stars in order for them to get ahead. According to the instruction book, a player can do the following to make the other player drop their Big Star:

  • Jump on the opponent.
  • Hit the opponent with a Fireball or a Shell Dash.
  • Get hit by enemies, fall off the course, get crushed by walls, etc.

There are also ways to get your opponet to lose three Big Stars at once; provided they have that much:

  • Ground Pound the opponent.
  • In the ice stage, drill into the opponent after jumping off of the Spin Block in the level.
