The player must press and hold down the R button, the Yoshi will walk up to the enemy, and when it is at full in the gauge, the player should let go, and Yoshi should "gulp" down the enemy, smashing the enemy into another enemy. Interestingly, the Yoshi Kid can eat spiked enemies without hurting his mouth.

The move is one known way to defeat the Iron Cleft's, which are invincible to any attacks. Also, defeating the Iron Cleft's was Mario's first task requiring Yoshi Kid.
