Gene Yuss, the fedora-wearing champ of the Links course.

Gene (full name Gene Yuss) is one of the most elite human golfers in the Mario Golf Series and Mario Golf: Advance Tour. Gene appears suave, intelligent, and sophisticated, if not arrogant and self-absorbed. He constantly speaks in third person ("The Gene"), and is very protective and competitive about his singles title. When a threat arises, he immediately loses his cool and begins to panic, striving to become better. Known as the Birdie King and the Greatest of the Great, he was once the champion of the Links, but his title was taken by Kid, forcing him to finally accept defeat.

In Mario Golf: Advance Tour he claimed his title back after Kid suffered a career-crippling incident. He enjoyed his glory and was overcome by his arrogance once again for the time being, but it was taken back yet again by Kid after he recovered from his accident and gained control of the ranks. He had formed a doubles team with him in a desperate attempt to stop Kid's students, Neil and Ella, from taking what titles remain with the Birdie King.

In Mario Golf, Gene has brown hair and blue eyes. His golf attire is the most old-fashioned of all the character designs. He wears a purple-collared white polo shirt, a brown belt and purple golfing pants. On his feet are white socks and brown golfing shoes, and he wears a fancy white golfing glove. A white ribbon black fedora sits on his head.

In Mario Golf: Advance Tour, Gene still continues to keep his taste in old-fashioned golfing attire. He wears a red vest over a white polo shirt, and his pants are a much lighter shade of purple. He still wears a white glove and maintains his flair of wearing fedoras, this time sprouting a red-ribbon maroon hat.

Trivia

• His name is an obvious pun of "genius".
• According to the Japanese Mario Golf website, Gene, like Putts, is also short in height. He boasts about being able to be an elite golfer while having such a short stature.
• According to the Japanese Camelot Mario Golf website, Gene has many adoring female fans, even if his arrogance does not fit the definition of gentleman.
