A Ruby is a type of currency found in Super Paper Mario. They resemble small red gems.

In Chapter 2, Mario breaks a vase belonging to Mimi, under the guise of Merlee's maid. Mimi orders Mario to pay for the vase in Rubies — one million of them, to be exact. Mario only had Coins on him, however, so Mimi puts him to work to pay off the debt. Mario starts off working just like the other captives, but soon discovers a massive hoard of Rubies, allowing him to pay off the debt.

Trivia

  • Rubies may have been named after Rupees, the currency in The Legend of Zelda series (which were named after the currency of India). Further comparing the two is the fact that they both resemble oblong octagonal gems. However, Rupees come in many colors and denominations, while Rubies only come in one. Rubies are also almost identical to the gem treasures of Clu Clu Land, which some have theorized that Rupees were based on.
  • Flipside Tokens greatly resemble Rubies, being simple recolors of them.
