If you've played ''Sonic Generations'' before (I haven't), the gameplay should feel familiar. Modern Sonic moves through three-dimensional levels and Classic Sonic moves through two-dimensional ones. As for the other characters, there's no gameplay I can find for them, so maybe Knuckles and Tails will move through levels akin to the ones in ''Sonic Adventures''? Not too big of a stretch I think. I can't tell what restricted type of levels the custom character goes through, but it appears to be mainly three-dimensional ones at the moment.
