They lose their wings when they are stomped in the air, turning them into regular Koopa Troopas. Typically, Koopa Paratroopas are placed in large gaps where Mario and Luigi must stomp on rows of them to traverse a pit or reap other rewards. They traditionally come in two varieties: Red Koopa Paratroopas usually fly up and down in a set path, while Green Koopa Paratroopas often bounce in the player's general direction or fly back and forth, although many exceptions have been made to these rules. Koopa Paratroopas also appear as playable characters in various spin-off games, occasionally even appearing without a normal Koopa Troopa as a playable character; in these installments, the red Paratroopas are the default color, having appeared first, and the green Paratroopas are the alternate color, having appeared later. Their name comes from "paratrooper," a term used in the military to describe soldiers who parachute down to attack.

Green-shelled Koopa Paratroopas either jump in one direction, some jumping higher than others, or fly in one direction, while the red-shelled Koopa Paratroopas fly back and forth horizontally or vertically, though some fly horizontally across the screen in one direction. Even though blue-shelled Koopas and yellow-shelled Koopas are introduced in this game, only the yellow-shelled Koopas have a winged variant. Yellow-shelled Koopa Paratroopas walk like regular Koopas, but they chase after Mario and jump over any shells that are in their way, though they do not jump over shells moving from behind them. Jumping on them gets rid of their wings and turn them into regular yellow-shelled Koopas. Yellow-shelled Koopa Paratroopas only appear in the Special Zone courses Awesome and Funky, making them very rare enemies.

Koopa Paratroopas make an appearance as a common enemy in New Super Mario Bros., reprising their general role and attack pattern from the previous Super Mario platforming games. Unlike in Super Mario Bros., both colors (red and green) can bounce towards players, in addition to their flying abilities. Unlike Koopa Troopas, they do not move to the music. Koopa Paratroopas are first encountered in World 1-4.

Koopa Paratroopas are usable enemies in Super Mario Maker and its Nintendo 3DS port, just like in past 2D Super Mario platformers. They can be created by combining a Koopa Troopa with a pair of wings. Green Paratroopas continuously leap on the ground in a zig-zag pattern, while the Paratroopas of red variety fly up and down on a vertical route. The player can enlarge Koopa Paratroopas by dragging a Super Mushroom onto them to turn them into Big Koopa Paratroopas (which can also be made by putting wings on a Big Koopa Troopa).

In The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, Koopa Paratroopas make only two appearances, in the episodes "King Mario of Cramalot" and "Princess, I Shrunk the Mario Brothers". In "King Mario of Cramalot", they drop a net on top of Mario, Luigi, Toad, Princess Toadstool and Mervin. The Koopa Paratroopas are based off the show's Koopa Troopa design, except that they are depicted in shades of red while having wings similar to a bee's, rather than their usual feathered ones. Much like the Koopa Troopas that appeared in that same episode, the Koopa Paratroopas are dressed up as knights to fit the medieval setting of Cramalot. In "Princess, I Shrunk the Mario Brothers", when the Koopa Troopas are shrunk, one that is jumping has a pair of wings.

There are two varieties: red and green-shelled. As in Super Mario World, the red variety flies back and forth on a set path, while the green ones can only hop towards the player. As in other games, stomping on them causes their wings to fall off and turns them into regular Koopa Troopas. Yoshis cannot swallow Para-Koopas, but like regular Koopas, they can spit them back out to make them slide across the ground in their shells, defeating enemies in their path. Eating them also makes them lose their wings. Para-Koopas are very common in this game, sometimes even more common than Koopa Troopas.

Paratroopa has its first playable role in the Nintendo 64 version of Mario Tennis. Here, Paratroopa is classified as a Tricky character, meaning that its shots have a high curve and spin to them to mess up opponents. However, Paratroopa serves from low reach, which means that it has trouble reaching balls. When Paratroopa loses, it loses its wings and becomes a normal Koopa Troopa. In the game's intro, Paratroopa participates in the tournament and loses to Luigi, allowing him to advance to a semi-finals match against Princess Peach.

Paratroopa returns as an unlockable technique player in the sequel, Mario Power Tennis, changing from its original typing. Instead, Paratroopa relies on hitting the ball with more accuracy and control. Paratroopa is moderately fast with the longest lunge in the game; however, it suffers from very low reach as it had in the Nintendo 64 game, Mario Tennis. Its offensive Power Shot is Energy Ball, which creates a large lob and tornado around the opponent who hits it, causing the opponent to spin out of control; this Power Shot is also able to catch lobs, unlike most Power Shots. Sky Dive is its defensive Power Shot, where it flies up into the sky and crash lands towards where the ball is. Paratroopa is unlocked when players clear all World Open cups in Doubles. Paratroopa makes an appearance on the last, Star tournament cleared blooper reel in the credits, where it accidentally wanders onto the scene, causing Wario, Waluigi, and Bowser to look at it; this causes all characters on the scene to start laughing after they have realized what happened.

After completing a singles tournament, the ceremony shows Paratroopa trying to grab the trophy from Waluigi, but his shell is attached to a fishing pole by Wario. As Peach is present and is standing back, Toad appears with a huge pair of scissors and cuts the rope, causing Wario to fall backwards and Paratroopa to ram into Waluigi, who fumbles the trophy. Paratroopa rushes for the trophy, takes it with gratitude, and hoists it while in the air as Peach claps.

A red Paratroopa is a playable racer in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, where it is a lightweight racer, along with its partner, a green Koopa Troopa. Like its partner, it has Triple Red Shells and Triple Green Shells as a special item. Its personal kart is the Para-Wing, which has very high acceleration, but low top speed and weight, which is typical of lightweight characters. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is the only playable appearance of Paratroopa, and it the only driver of the game yet to make another playable appearance in the Mario Kart series.
