It is an instrument used for measuring ratios and proportions, although it more closely resembles a [[wikipedia:Compass (drawing tool)|compass]] used for drawing circles rather than the [[wikipedia:Sector (instrument)|proportional compass]] that it is supposed to be. It is given to [[Mario]] by a mathematics student of [[Galileo Galilei]], who claims that Galileo perfected its design after Mario brings up that Galileo is known for being an inventor. Mario can then give it to a wandering poet, who asks for some sort of compensation to continue talking.
