''Swoopulas''' are gray batlike creatures, and a more powerful variety of the [[Swoop]]er encountered in the ''[[Paper Mario (series)|Paper Mario]]'' series. It attacks by leeching hit points from [[Mario]] or his [[partner]] in a similar manner to a [[Fuzzy]]'s attack. Its name is based off {{wp|Count Dracula}}, due to its similar health-leeching ability.

In ''[[Paper Mario]]'', Swoopulas appear in the [[Crystal Palace]]. At the start of battle, Swoopulas are perched on the ceiling and can be knocked down with an item, [[List of moves|Special Move]], certain partner moves, or the [[Quake Hammer]] or [[Hammer Throw (badge)|Hammer Throw]] abilities. They fly down briefly to attack, but return to their roost unless previously knocked down. They leech two hit points at a time up to five times unless an [[Action Command]] gauge is filled up first, similar to [[Jungle Fuzzy]].

In ''[[Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door]]'', Swoopulas appear in the [[Palace of Shadow]] and slightly late in the [[Pit of 100 Trials (Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door)|Pit of 100 Trials]]. Unlike the weaker Swoopers, they start battle in the air rather than on the ceiling. Their leeching move now takes four hit points, but cannot hit more than once a turn. An even stronger variant known as [[Swampire]] appears near the end of the Pit of 100 Trials.
