The Phantom, also known by the anagram Tom Phan, is a Rabbid/Boo hybrid who appears in the Mario + Rabbids series. He has an Enlightenment-style attire and a Boo-like underside that occasionally turns transparent, revealing a phonograph inside. He is a parody of The Phantom of the Opera, as evidenced by the title of his first song, "The Phantom of the Bwahpera." He tends to be quite boastful about what he is, calling himself a "national treasure", as proven by his battle quotes. The Phantom also has a tendency to talk in opera sing-song and speaks with a thick French accent. His voice is provided by Augustin Chemelle.[2]

“Humph! You think yours is a real moustache?”
Phantom, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

The Phantom first appears in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle as the end boss of Spooky Trails. He is created when Bowser Jr., with the help of Spawny, combines a Rabbid, a Boo balloon and a phonograph. As per his name and theme, he sings a song to Mario and company before engaging in battle. The song is heard as part of the game's second trailer.[3][4] He is the only Rabbid in game to communicate using normal sentences, instead of various grunts and screams. However, his song starts with several uses of the "Bwaah" sound, but with a deeper voice. He also makes these sounds throughout the battle itself. The Phantom is shown to be extremely vain, as evidenced by his obsession over his spotlights.

In battle, the Phantom is initially immune to all attacks. To be able to damage him, Mario and company must destroy the generators beside him, disabling the spotlights focused on him; the Phantom becomes vulnerable once all active light fixtures are smashed. Each phase of the battle has one more light fixture to smash than the last, as well as giving the boss new Rabbid minions at the end of his first turn; Valkyries, Bucklers and Peek-a-Boos. His main attack is an operatic shriek that acts like a Rocket weapon; it hits everyone within a radius for 40 HP and can inflict the Push effect. He can also activate a ghostly shield around him; the first hero to move within range becomes petrified, unable to take further action for their turn.

Upon his defeat, the Phantom will throw a melodramatic sobbing tantrum.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope[edit]

In Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, the Phantom makes a cameo in Terra Flora, where a picture of him is shown on a sound disc cover for a giant gramophone. He is also referenced in many of Bea's murals, acting as Bea's co-star and her ex-boyfriend.

In The Last Spark Hunter DLC, a gigantic doll of the Phantom's likeness appears in Melodic Gardens; when Beep-0 sees it, he jokingly states that he and the heroes will never encounter the real Phantom again following his "sound" defeat.

“Come-BACK? Hpmh - were you ever a THING, Rayman?”
Phantom, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope

The Phantom himself returns as the titular main antagonist in the third DLC pack, Rayman in the Phantom Show, in which he is the host of the Space Opera Network. When Rayman, Rabbid Peach, Rabbid Mario and Beep-0 arrive at the Space Opera Network, the Phantom claims that he has changed for the better and tasks the group to help boost the ratings of the network. After the heroes improve the sets, he prepares a wrap up party to thank them, only for him to reveal to the group that he was planning his revenge. After insulting the heroes through song, they stop him for good as he dramatically portrays his defeat.

Similarly to his boss fight in the original game, the Phantom is initially immune to all attacks and the heroes must destroy the generators beside him to disable the spotlights and make him vulnerable. The Phantom's technique and outfit changes in each phase of the battle. In the first phase, he is named Swingin' Phantom and he can disable the heroes' Techniques, Spark powers and Costume powers. In the second phase, he is named Rockin' Phantom and he can repels heroes from his position, disable their weapons and inflict Burn damage. In the last phase, he is named Final Phantom and he can disable the heroes' attacks and techniques and perform an additional attack on them when they are in his range and line of sight.

THE PHANTOM

The Phantom has been quite busy since we last saw him at Spooky Trails - a whirlwind relationship with Bea, the Warden of Terra Flora; co-host of the annual Galactovision song contest; and an album (A Thousand Hours of Mario Falling Into Lava), all under the watchful eye of the paparazzi. And most recently? Director of the Space Opera Network. Whatever you might say about him - he knows how to milk his 15 minutes.

THE PHANTOM 2

The Phantom lured Rayman, Rabbid Mario, Rabbid Peach, and myself to the Space Opera Network under false pretenses, so we might boost the viewership from which he draws his power. Should his spotlight have grown any larger, he would have become invincible. Fortunately, I chose the perfect moment to strike. Once again, I was onto him from the onset!
