King of the Thrill is a 2-vs.-2 minigame in Mario Party 8. Its name and goal come from the real-world game king of the hill, in which one individual tries to maintain control of a certain area, often a hill or pile, while the other players try to seize it. The name is a pun on the tv series King of The Hill

Introduction

Characters from both teams are shown climbing ladders until they reach the top of two small rocky platforms similar to the ones in the Mount Duel mode in Mario Party 6, behind which is a single larger rocky platform. The minigame then begins.

Gameplay

There are two opposing characters standing on each of the two small rocky platforms. Each set of two opposing characters must fight until one of them falls off. Small portions of each platform gradually begin to crumble away, making it hard for characters to stay on the platforms. The character that wins jumps onto a ladder leading to the larger platform as their smaller platform crumbles away completely. If a player falls after defeating their opponent, a Fly Guy lifts them up to the larger platform. If both members of the same team manage to defeat their respective opponents from the other team, both members of that team climb a ladder onto the larger platform and win. If characters from opposing teams defeat their respective opponents, both characters face off on the larger platform until one is victorious. Portions of the larger platform also begin to crumble away after a certain point. The team of the winning character wins the minigame. If both characters fall off the larger platform or if five minutes pass, the minigame ends in a tie.

Ending

Both winners (or the remaining winner) stand on the larger platform and celebrate, while the silhouettes of two Fly Guys are seen flying and carrying the losing team's characters in the background. If all players fall off the platforms, four Fly Guy silhouettes carry the silhouettes of all four players. If two players from different teams remain after five minutes pass, the players stand on the extremely small platform and do their losing animations.
