“Incredible! I can't believe it! It's the legendary "Seed" I've read about in the ancient gardening texts. These are so rare! Can you even begin to comprehend what a huge discovery this is? I've spent my whole life searching for one! It's too much, I tell ya!”
Gardener, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

The Seed is an item in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. When the Beezo runs away after Smilax is defeated, it drops the Seed nearby. Mario can take the Seed and show it to the Gardener in Rose Town. After showing him the Seed, the Gardener speaks quickly in amazement, increasing the tempo of the town's music as well. This causes Mario to collapse onto the ground. After he recovers, the Gardener asks for Mario to give him the Seed. Once the Gardener is given both the Seed and Fertilizer, he puts them in the nearby pot. This causes a beanstalk to rise from the pot, allowing access to the two Lazy Shells. Because it is considered as a normal item, the player can prevent access to the Lazy Shells by selling or throwing away the Seed or the Fertilizer.

In the Switch remake, the Seed is made a key item and cannot be sold or thrown away.
