Lanterns (also referred to as torches[1][2][3] or candlesticks[4]) are recurring objects in the 3D Super Mario games. Lighting lanterns with fireballs can open pathways or make collectible items appear. Their function is shared with the Torches in the series The Legend of Zelda, something that is lampshaded in World 5-2 of Super Mario 3D Land.

In nearly all appearances, the player character lights lanterns in their Fire form. Levels that feature lanterns almost always include Fire Flowers. Like with lava and other forms of fire, touching a lantern's flame burns the character, even if they were the one who lit it.

History[edit]

Super Mario Galaxy / Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

Fire Mario lighting torches in the Deep Dark Galaxy

Torches[1] are introduced in Super Mario Galaxy. They typically bear red flames, but in some ghost-themed galaxies, their flames are blue. In missions featuring the Fire Flower, lighting all of the torches in an area triggers a nearby event, such as in the opening of a stone gate in The Underground Ghost Ship. Torches otherwise can be encountered already lit. The flames can be put out by a spin, typically giving a coin afterward. They have the same function in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Super Mario 3D Land[edit]

Torches return in Super Mario 3D Land. In this game, lighting them usually reveals coins. Exclusively in World 5-2, lighting all four of the torches in one specific area causes the "Puzzle Solved Jingle" from the series The Legend of Zelda to play while a door that leads to the level's second Star Medal opens.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]

In Super Mario 3D World and its port, lighting torches[3] can brighten up dark areas such as in Switchblack Ruins, and reveal Green Stars as seen in Piranha Creeper Creek after Dark, where every torch in each room must be lit to get them.

Super Mario Odyssey[edit]

Lanterns appear in nearly every kingdom in Super Mario Odyssey, exhibiting designs that compliment the visited area's culture and geography. Typically, lanterns are always lit. They can be extinguished with a Cap Throw, by striking them with a captured Pokio's beak, or with Yoshi's tongue. A lantern often releases a coin or a Life-Up Heart when its flame is put out. In Shiveria, four candlesticks encircle the entrance to Snowline Circuit. One becomes lit when Mario clears a barrier. When all are lit, the entrance becomes accessible. Lanterns are the only source of light around Pitchblack Mountain in New Donk City.

In the Luncheon Kingdom, lighting specific lanterns awards Mario Power Moons. Traditional power-ups do not appear in Super Mario Odyssey, so in lieu of Fire Flowers, Mario must capture Fire Bros, Fire Piranha Plants, and Lava Bubbles to light the lanterns. Five different objectives in the Luncheon Kingdom require lighting lanterns. A similar objective involving a campfire is in the Wooded Kingdom.
