A platform from Super Mario 3D Land.

Platforms are obstacles in almost every adventure video game, including the Mario series. They are physical objects that the player jumps across to get through levels or discover secrets. Mainly in side-scrollers, the player can jump up through the bottoms of some platforms (and in Super Smash Bros.' case, drop through the tops as well), what can't be done in tridimensional games. Most times, platforms have gimmicky traits: falling when the player steps on it, moving up or down, following rails, spinning, tilting, etc. Some special kinds of platforms include: Donut Lifts, Flatbed Ferries, Tilt Lifts, Stretch Blocks, and so forth.
