Rainbow Road is a stage that only appears in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. The stage is based on the Rainbow Road course from Mario Kart 7.
The stage is a cruise-type stage similar to Mute City from Super Smash Bros. Melee and Port Town Aero Dive from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and the match primarily takes place on a flat platform that hovers around the course. Like in the aforementioned stages, the platform will occasionally stop on the track itself. During those times, an on-screen warning may appear indicating that karts driven by Shy Guys will pass by (similar to F-Zero machines), being able to damage any fighters they hit. Additionally, falling onto the track itself while the platform is moving damages the fighter. Shy Guys do not appear in multiplayer mode.
Locations where the flat platform can stop include the second gap on the course, the rainbow Mushroom Platform, a platform near the Saturn-like planet, the holey section of the course, and the end of the spinning tunnel.
While the course layout is similar to the original, there are some minor differences. Dash Panels are not present (with the exception of the speed pads right after the start of section 3), the Bouncy Mushroom is an ordinary platform, the holey section doesn't move, and a separate platform was added outside of the main track near the Saturn-like planet (as mentioned above).
The Final Destination variant of the stage has players battling on a non-moving platform over the final gliding section of the course.
Rainbow Road and Pac-Maze are the only stages from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS to not reappear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
