A platform is an obstacle in almost every adventure video game, and the Super Smash Bros. series. In sidescrollers, the player can jump through platforms (and in Super Smash Bros' case, drop through as well), but in 3D games, the player could not jump through them. Some platforms cannot be jumped through in sidescrollers (Mario Bros. for example), but most can.
