However, nonstandard Game Overs are sometimes used to punish specific mistakes. The Game Over screen differs from game to game, but the text is usually set against a blank screen. After a Game Over, the player is typically given an option to restart the game from the last save point. However, many games from earlier {{wp|History of video games|hardware generations}} lack saving functionality, requiring the games to be restarted from the beginning.

Somehow, you were sent to The Underwhere while still very much alive... My power can return you to your world if you so wish...</ref> which is similar to the philosophy of the afterlife. Mario, Luigi, and Bowser end up in The Underwhere, which resembles [[hell]], where some [[Shayde]]s ask Mario how his "game," referring to his life, was.
