In every temple, there are three rounds a challenger has to win to become champion of that temple. Two Toads standing outside the temple give hints as to how the first two opponents choose their cards, except for the eighth temple. Each opponent Mario faces is one of the game's enemies, each differing between temples. However in round three, instead of an enemy, Mario instead faces off against the Rock Paper Wizard if one of the story bosses has just been defeated. A Koopaling or Kamek Enemy Card and 1000 coins are obtained by beating Rock Paper Wizard on every occasion (a Replica Thing card and 1000 coins if it was an enemy). When he's defeated in all eight temples, Rock Paper Wizard reveals he is retiring and takes off his hand hat, letting everyone know he was a Toad. Mario and Huey leave the temple and discover there were actually eight Rock Paper Wizards. The Rock Paper Wizards' masks are seen next to the owners of each Prisma Café afterwards.

If the player loses in any of the three confrontations, it is required to get a Mini Paint Star in order to enter again. A blue Toad in a left corner can sneak Mario into the tournament for a fee, but the opponents' cards will be randomized.
