Froggies are amphibian enemies in the early Yoshi games. They have tongues and appetites rivaling Yoshi's own in size.

History

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Frog Pirate

In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Froggies appear both as standard enemies and as a boss,[1] being separately localized as Frog Pirates[2] and Prince Froggy, respectively. They live in the swamps and wetlands of Yoshi's Island and are found primarily in the third World of the game. If a Yoshi comes too close to one, it will lash out its tongue and try to steal Baby Mario. Stepping on its head only disables it for a moment, so Yoshi should instead try to throw an Egg at the frog or swallow it. Spitting out a Frog Pirate will only make it fall off the screen, enabling it to respawn later.

Prince Froggy is the midpoint boss of World 3, and offers a unique challenge. When Yellow Yoshi meets him in combat, Kamek swoops in and shrinks Yoshi, allowing Froggy to swallow the Yoshi whole. The actual battle is between Yoshi and Froggy's uvula, with hazardous stomach acid dripping from the top. Shy-Guys (which appear larger due to Yoshi's diminished size) fall into the stomach, and can be turned into large eggs. Yoshi must throw the eggs at Prince Froggy's uvula. After each hit, the stomach becomes progressively redder. After enough hits, the stomach flashes various colors as Yoshi escapes through Froggy's intestines, and he reverts to his normal size while Froggy lays defeated.

In the adaptation of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island from volume 14 of Super Mario-kun, Prince Froggy swallows Yoshi, Mario, Luigi, and Baby Mario. Shy Guys fall on the group, but they are avoided. Yoshi attempts to hit the uvula, and although the egg bounces many times in the stomach, it misses the uvula. Finally, a giant Shy Guy lands on them. Yoshi eventually finds a star, which turns Baby Mario into Superstar Mario. Baby Mario then runs up the walls and gives the uvula a beating. This causes Froggy to defecate the characters out.

Tetris Attack

Froggy reappears in Tetris Attack with a Clawdaddy for a partner. He replaces the water fairy, Elias, from Panel de Pon. He is a friend of Yoshi's who needs to be rescued from Kamek's spell.

Profiles and statistics

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

  • Official Nintendo Player's Guide:
    • Frog Pirate: These larcenous amphibians have tongues even longer than Yoshi's, and they'd love to steal Baby Mario![2]
    • Prince Froggy: His Royal Highness doesn't like to work up a sweat in the jungle heat, so Kamek will have to shrink Yoshi and Mario down to a bite-sized morsel. Once inside Froggy's stomach, Yoshi will have to fight his out way by using the primary food in Froggy's diet: Shy-Guys![3]

Ribbet, ribbet. Froggy here!

For frogs, a lot of rain is good. But... ribbet. Not everyone is so happy about it, ribbet. Well... ribbet. I don't care! Ribbet!

(A large frog snatches babies by stretching out its long tongue. If you hit it with an egg, it faints, so eat it while it's still alive. It also appears as a boss in World 3-4.)

Trivia

  • The name "Prince Froggy" is a reference to a fairy tale involving a princess kissing a frog and turning it into a prince.
  • He is the only boss that is not affected by Kamek's magic. In turn, he is also the only boss that does not explode upon defeat - Yoshi does the explosion effect instead. Accordingly, the effect most likely signifies the reversion of Kamek's spells. The latter is supported with Hookbill the Koopa's defeat, where after the explosions occur, Hookbill bursts out of the destroyed shell in his original size, as well as the defeat of Big Baby Bowser, where upon exploding, he is clearly restored to his original size.
  • Despite Prince Froggy possessing one, real-life frogs lack uvulas entirely.
  • Although Prince Froggy's boss fight in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island takes place inside his stomach, Toadies still appear to abduct Baby Mario if Yoshi is harmed and unable to retrieve the lost baby.
