They apply to any sort of in-game render, but this category excludes pre-rendered sprites such as in Donkey Kong Country and Mario vs. Donkey Kong and also pre-rendered sprites used for the HUD. This category also includes renders taken from 3D programs. Finally, this category uses renders cropped from screenshots, mainly because those have really no other place to go.
