The animals currently understood to be "true" fish are not closely related to each other. For example, a goldfish is more closely related to a human than it is to a great white shark. However, the current use of the word "fish" encompasses {{wp|Vertebrate|backboned animals}} that did not evolve from a terrestrial ancestor.
