Gunion
Character artwork of a Gunion.
Artwork from Super Mario Land
First appearance Super Mario Land (1989)
Latest appearance Splatoon 2 (cameo) (2017)

Gunions[1][2] are octopus-like enemies appearing only in World 2-3 in Super Mario Land. Gunions have a simple attack pattern and subdue the Marine Pop whenever it comes into range. Gunions explode into two balls if shot twice, and both balls home in on Mario. Defeating a Gunion earns the player 800 points. One Gunion posed as Princess Daisy, which Mario discovered after defeating Dragonzamasu.

Only two Gunions appear in the Super Mario Land manga. The first one is shot down with the Marine Pop's torpedos, but the Gunion splits into two and attempts to lunge at Mario, who dodges the two parts. After defeating Dragonzamasu, Mario hugs the imprisoned Daisy, only for her to then be revealed to be a coiling Gunion, which inks Mario and runs away laughing.

A green Gunion is among the monsters chasing Mario in the Nintendo Comics System story The Fish That Should've Gotten Away.

Profiles[edit]

Super Mario Land[edit]

  • Instruction booklet: The Gunion shakes up and down in the water. Take care because if you hit it with 2 torpedoes, it splits in two and attacks.
  • 3DS Virtual Console manual: The Gunion shakes up and down in the water. Be careful--once you hit it twice with torpedoes, it splits in two and attacks.
