Warp Barrels[1][2] are an uncommon type of barrel that appears in the second and third installments of the Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Land games each. A Warp Barrel can normally be told apart from the W painted on it. A Warp Barrel has the function of an optional warp, sending the player characters to the goal. Warp Barrels are usually hidden off-screen or in out-of-reach areas. A Warp Barrel is invisible until the Kongs enter it.

History

Donkey Kong Country series

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest

Warp Barrels appear in every level of Gangplank Galleon and Crocodile Cauldron in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest.[3] They have the design of a Barrel Kannon, although not in the remake. By entering a Warp Barrel, Diddy and Dixie are sent into a single-screen warp room with a group of bananas shaped like a large exclamation mark and an exit to the right.[4]

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!

A Warp Barrel is present in most levels of Lake Orangatanga and Kremwood Forest in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!.[2] It is the first game where Warp Barrels bear a "W" symbol, which would be retained in all later releases. Unlike before, Warp Barrels lack an intermediate area, sending the Kongs in front of the Level Flag instantly instead.[5]

Donkey Kong Country (Game Boy Advance)

In the Game Boy Advance remake of Donkey Kong Country, Warp Barrels replace the Blast Barrels that sent Donkey Kong and Diddy near the end of the level in previous versions. There are many more Warp Barrels than the original barrels. They appear in every level of Kongo Jungle,[6] some levels in Monkey Mines, and in Trick Track Trek. Entering a Warp Barrel takes the Kongs to a place with an ice walkway in a black void and bananas arranged to spell the word "WARP."[7][8]

Donkey Kong Land series

Warp Barrels appear only in levels of Gangplank Galleon and Cape Codswallop, the first worlds of Donkey Kong Land 2 and Donkey Kong Land III respectively. They take the player characters to a small, hidden room leading right before the end of the level. Warp Barrels have identical sprites to Bonus Barrels in Donkey Kong Land 2 but are marked with a distinct "W" in Donkey Kong Land III.
