A Shogun is an ant-like creature and a relative to Armored Ants found in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. They are seen in the desert region in Land's End. They reside in whirls in the sand. Mario has to follow them through the whirls in order to get to Belome Temple and through it to Monstro Town.
Mario always has to get into the whirl with a Shogun inside. However, sometimes the Shogun quickly changes the whirl it is in, and Mario may also have to fight the Shogun before being able to get into the whirl. When getting into one, he reaches another area of Land's End's desert.
In battle, Shoguns are very tough opponents for Mario and co, as the party has to be careful not to hit them with Mallow's magic in fear of the Shoguns using Vigor Up to increase their power.
