The Koopalings are seven of Bowser's children. They each guard a castle in Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World and are bosses. Note that Bowser Jr., Bowser's eighth and favorite child, is not considered to be a Koopaling, but rather to have replaced the seven Koopas.
They made a surprise comeback in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, were going to appear in Super Princess Peach but were left out, and were rumored to be in New Super Mario Bros.
Additionally, the Koopalings were regular characters on Mario cartoons, however, since the cartoon creators did not want to purchase the copyrights to every Koopaling, they were renamed.
