Pauline as Mario's Niece[edit]

I've been looking all over to verify that in the Saturday Supercade she was Mario's niece, but I haven't come across any proof yet. She's a fellow trainer/handler at the circus, but that's all I got. Anyone have a source? Stumpers! 03:52, 1 July 2008 (EDT)

Minis March again screenshot[edit]

We could really use an image of Pauline from one of the cut-scene sequences in game. It is however hard to find any high enough quality ones. Could anyone who has or can obtain any appropriate ones please add them to the article. Thank you. Despot joil

Pauline's voice??[edit]

In Mario vs Donkey Kong: Mini-land Mayhem! Pauline is given one of her first larger speaking roles, along with this she seems to have gained her own unique voice and therefore voice actor. So, if anyone owns this game it be GREAT if they could see if the Staff Credits name a voice actress for Pauline so that the article may show it? (in the style of other voiced characters articles) THANKS!! Despot joil

Nevermind. Mario vs Donkey Kong: Mini-land Mayhem! Did not contain any voice actor information in the credits. Despot joil

Pauline's voice is once again heard in Tipping Stars. Makes me really curious who that could be, or where we would even begin to look for that information. Dogman15 (talk) 22:58, 6 February 2017 (EST)

Mario's Girlfriend[edit]

This is little more than a fan assumption. It's not like Peach where the bios confirm this, a silly heart appearing above them =/= love relationship. Can someone find proof for this or remove it? YoshiCookie (talk) 10:15, 10 December 2015 (EST)

The fact that Mario and Pauline were dating was plainly stated in the original Donkey Kong games they both appeared in. However in the instruction booklet of her first appearance in Mario VS Donkey series it states they are good friends. So they are no longer romantically involved, finding proof of their original relationship will be near impossible as the original Donkey Kong games are now decades old, but it is well known that during this time period the two were "an item". This is 100% accurate. Despot joil

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem claims that she's still Mario's girlfriend however. Also, a heart appearing above them is supposed to mean love. Koopalmier (talk) 05:59, 6 October 2012 (EDT)
I checked the manual and it just says she's his friend. Are you talking about the heart? And yes, she is his girlfriend in the original, I checked. YoshiCookie (talk) 10:15, 10 December 2015 (EST)

Perhaps the heart over her head should just be taken as appreciation or just a strong response out of close friendship, and being rescued by her "hero" Mario. She may infact still have affection for him, but no longer romantically. Mostly it is actually a reference to the original Donkey Kong game where Pauline and Mario briefly stand apart with a floating heart between them to signify a happy ending. It's just a tip of the hat moment to more retro players. Finally owning the game Mini-Land Mayhem, I have just now checked the instruction booklet the only mention of their relationship is on PG7 (the characters page). It states - Pauline - Mario's glamorous friend and a special guest at Mini-Land's grand opening. And that's all it says on the matter. Hope this clears things up.

Despot joil

Right, so Super Smash Bros. for Wii U confirms that Pauline is (or was) Mario's girlfriend in one of the game's randomly-generated tips, so there goes that. LinkTheLefty (talk) 14:51, 21 December 2014 (EST)

Picture[edit]

I think her picture should be updated to a more recent picture. It may not show the whole body, but it shows how she looks better. --Poponana2 (talk) 21:53, 3 January 2014 (EST)

There really isn't any solo artwork other than the one we're using. There's nothing wrong with using an old picture, especially if Pauline hasn't changed much over the years.

Does she even HAVE a personality?[edit]

Doesn't look like it. BooDestroyer (talk) 16:04, 24 September 2014 (EDT)

Possible NEW profile picture?[edit]

Hey, so there is this transparent cut out of Pauline floating around. It's decent quality, but is not technically character artwork. So I'll post it here and see what other editors think? Despot_joil

Pauline
Maybe?

Some might argue that this is a render, and artworks take precedence over in-game renders. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 19:39, 10 February 2015 (EST)

The "Artwork" being used currently[edit]

It isn't an artwork: it is a fan art I made long ago by editing the image of her SSB4 trophy. Please, remove it. It is fan work+taken without my knowledgement.User:Ashley anEoTselkie/sig

As in the previous topic that I raised myself, in game renders shouldn't be used at all. Could someone please revert it back to its previous art asset. Thank you (I don't know how to revert edits) User:Despot_joil

Nah, I didn't quite say that. I said that artwork has priority over in-game renders, but in-game renders shall be used if no official artwork at a decent resolution can be found. Anyway, it's easy to revert edits: check the page's history, click on "prev", and you'll come to a revision. On the upper right part, where it says, "Latest revision as of (date)", you'll see (edit) and (undo). Click on undo, save your changes. Easy. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. Paulines new artwork[edit]

Hi guys! I'm RikiiU.

Pauline is now seen with a new 3d artwork. But infact, that is not the case. I made that picture via photoshop a few months ago... I took it from the ending screen from Tipping Stars, erased the background, edited the dress and then the shoes.

So, I'm sorry, but I've got to ask someone to erase it, since it's not official...

I assume you're talking about this artwork taken from this screenshot? A majority of it appears official and it looks like you did a great job restoring the missing bits. Really, good work! You can always ask an admin if you're worried and see what they say. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 19:06, 3 November 2016 (EDT)

I'm fine with edited screenshots of 3D models as long as they 1) don't look ugly with obvious artifcats (with a non-standard monobook or otherwise), 2) are not used in the lead and 3) are properly identified as being edited screenshots. --Glowsquid (talk) 19:17, 3 November 2016 (EDT)

Pauline and Lady are separate characters in Japan?[edit]

Hello! I've been doing some research for Pauline, and as all of us know, she and the original woman Mario rescued in the arcade Donkey Kong are the same person...Alright, there are Nintendo's pages and bios that confirm this.

However in Japan that seems not to be the case: As already listed in the page, on the japanese Donkey Kong (Gameboy) Pauline is listed as a "new heroine" or something like that. Being not a recent thing, various japanese fans assumed they were the same, thought a lot of other fans treated Pauline and Lady as separate.

However on other older and also newer media Nintendo treats them as separate. The official "Super Mario Character Encyclopedia" states that Lady and Pauline are different characters, and curiously enough, that both lives in New York. Other japanese guides that just feature Pauline treats her as a new woman Mario has to save. The newest media I could find is this from last year. I am not too good at japanese (I know nothing but simple words and setences) but when Lady appears Peach says something like "This is not me!" (yes, she looks slghtly jealous) and asks Mario "Who is this?"; Mario then says something like "...It is Lady"

The official japanese website for the Virtual Console of Wii name the characters "Mario, Lady and Donkey Kong"...

Share your thoughts...please!

User:Ashley anEoTselkie/sig

Well, I don't understand Japanese, but in the Pauline's trophy information in Japanese version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, the year quoted is "1981", which means that there is no such separation.

We know that her appearance was different before the Game Boy version, and was in this version that she was renamed in Japan. Taking this into account, the listing of Lady and Pauline as different characters may have been a mistake.

About the use of the name Lady in Japanese description of Donkey Kong for the Virtual Console... well, Peach is still referred to as Toadstool in "Western" decriptions for the Super Mario Bros. games from NES and Super Mario World.

--PhGuy12 (talk) 08:39, 27 November 2016 (EST)

Well, it might be...I am actually trying to translate this Pauline trophy...My japanese is REALLY poor, but it seems that this trophy description actually talk about the "LadyxPauline" things: there is a setence more to the end that says something like "Is she Lady?". I may give a full translation to this someday XD User:Ashley anEoTselkie/sig

Requesting an update[edit]

Hi.

The link that is used as a source for Pauline being referred to as "Paula" doesn't allow for frame accessing, so we may need an updated link for that. Weedle McHairybug (talk) 06:08, 16 June 2017 (EDT)

Article Artwork[edit]

Since a new batch of Super mario Odyssey renders were released, including an artwork for Pauline, should we upgrade her infobox image to this one or wait until the game is released? Notice that her appearance is slightly different here, in term of clothing User:Ashley anEoTselkie/sig 08:48, 15 September 2017 (EDT)

We do not update the infobox image until after the game is released. Also, we do not usually add artwork that is specialized for the game it appeared in. --A sprite of a Flame Chomp from New Super Mario Bros. Wii.TheFlameChomp (talk) 09:05, 15 September 2017 (EDT)
Yeah, that was what I thought, thanks!User:Ashley anEoTselkie/sig 09:12, 15 September 2017 (EDT)
"Specialized?" She had the hat before, it's the same hat she lost back in the very first game! Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 16:05, 15 September 2017 (EDT)
Well, she also has a microphone with her in the image, and this is the only game she has sung in before. --A sprite of a Flame Chomp from New Super Mario Bros. Wii.TheFlameChomp (talk) 17:03, 15 September 2017 (EDT)
That can be easily cropped out, there's no overlap. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 17:27, 15 September 2017 (EDT)
We should avoid editing official artwork when we can, though. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 17:33, 15 September 2017 (EDT)
Yes, she did have the hat before, but most of her appearances were without it; Anyway, I think now the best is to wait the game to be released before posting it. We might also get renders of her in the mayor clothing or without the hat, who knows?User:Ashley anEoTselkie/sig 20:33, 15 September 2017 (EDT)

I understand that it's "specialised" artwork made for a specific game, but I'd hope to see an exception made. This is the first 3D artwork of Pauline we've ever gotten. Currently we're using a low-detail trophy render, and I wouldn't want to see that continue to be used when we have an official alternative. Also, Pauline's design in Odyssey is very different from the Mario vs. Donkey trend we've seen over the years, namely the facial appearance. I think we should be representing this change, and her Odyssey appearance is what visitors to the site would expect to be seeing.

'Shroom Spotlight Shokora (talk · edits) 21:16, 15 September 2017 (EDT)

The rule isn't that specialized artwork isn't allowed, it's that non-specialized artwork takes priority over specialized artwork. If this is the only artwork we have of Pauline, it should automatically apply. Well, the full rule doesn't have many details, but it doesn't say anything about not using certain kinds of artwork. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 21:31, 15 September 2017 (EDT)
I understand Shokora's point, but like I said, we should maybe wait for the game release, maybe we get alternative renders for her with different clothes and/or without microphone, for example? Anyway, if nothing else is released, I'd say we should use this one, it is way better than the 3D model, and more updated than her old 2D artwork; Even that 2D artwork is outdated, sicne the MarioVsDonkey Kong games already depict her with a different eye color, for example.User:Ashley anEoTselkie/sig 21:36, 15 September 2017 (EDT)
The current picture isn't even artwork, it's a cropped in-game render from a non-primarily-Mario-or-Donkey Kong franchise. Which therefore the artwork takes priority over anyways. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk)
Agreed, the only reason I defended this image is because I didn't read the rule very well. --A sprite of a Flame Chomp from New Super Mario Bros. Wii.TheFlameChomp (talk) 21:43, 15 September 2017 (EDT)
Sooooo...is it going to be changed?Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 07:32, 21 September 2017 (EDT)
When the game releases, yes. Yoshi876 (talk)

So now Pauline's artwork from Mario Kart Tour is being used, but I'm just not sure about it because the quality on it is pretty bad to be used for the infobox, so I think until we could get a better quality version we should keep using the Super Mario Odyssey artwork. It still highlights her current appearence. Mario Sakuraba (talk) 05:20, September 28, 2019 (EDT)

That's the same thing that I'm thinking as well; because so far, the picture itself of Pauline for MKT looks like it was taken/edited from a screenshot made from the game; plus the image quality itself isn't good enough to surpass the current one we have for the Pauline promo art for Super Mario Odyssey. --M. C. - Profile | Talk Page 06:56, September 28, 2019 (EDT)

I think we ought to have a vote on this. Mario Sakuraba (talk) 07:56, September 28, 2019 (EDT)

Technically, as the wiki rules state, we should use the most recent artwork portraying a character in their most standard/frequently-used appearance. For Pauline, that would actually be her appearance in Mario Kart Tour, used consistently throughout all appearances since Mario vs. Donkey Kong up until Super Mario Odyssey. Even if the image quality is a little bit worse, it technically should be overridden. The exception is if Pauline's "artwork" is actually a render, as is the case for Baby Rosalina. Though I'm not an expert on that. MarioComix (talk) 16:03, September 28, 2019 (EDT)

I don't see anything wrong with using her Mario Kart Tour render, it looks fine and qualifies. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 16:15, September 28, 2019 (EDT)

What she's also known as[edit]

Not only is she known as the Lady and The Beautiful Girl, but she's also known as Daniella Verducci. --NoahAlexanderJohnson101 (talk) 18:07, 20 October 2017 (EDT)

Uh... You're going to need to cite that, buddy. ~Camwood777 (talk) 18:51, 20 October 2017 (EDT)
He's talking about the movie script, but we separate those characters anyways. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 19:31, 20 October 2017 (EDT)

Another "Lady" reference in Odyssey?[edit]

Is the dance move she makes here a reference to her sprite animation from the Arcade Donkey Kong? It seems like it.User:Ashley anEoTselkie/sig 17:50, 27 October 2017 (EDT)

I thought it was. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 17:52, 27 October 2017 (EDT)

Name origin[edit]

Apparently Don James himself confirmed in today's Nintendo Treehouse @ E3 stream that Pauline was indeed name after his then-girlfriend. Does anyone have the footage? --Glowsquid (talk) 18:17, 14 June 2018 (EDT)

Pauline's name origins. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 18:32, 14 June 2018 (EDT)

First use of the name Pauline[edit]

The Saturday Supercade series was not really the first time the name Pauline was used; the name was used before in a licensed coloring book released in 1982, and a Coleco's arcade figure collection. I'm not sure if one of them was the first material to use the name Pauline, though.
--PhGuy12 (talk) 14:58, 22 November 2018 (EST)

Good catch. The article has been updated to state that the name Pauline first showed up in post-arcade licensed media rather than specifying Saturday Supercade. LinkTheLefty (talk) 18:26, 22 November 2018 (EST)

Species[edit]

Why isn't "New Donker" thrown into her species when she's listed as a member? In fact, judging by her cartoonish looks, I'd say she's also Homo nintendonus rather than Homo sapiens like the other New Donkers, then again, I suppose it's more like a citizen ship User:MarioLover54/sig 3:12 PM (EST) July 1, 2019

Categorization[edit]

I think we should put Pauline's article in the "Mayors" category, given her role in Odyssey. I'd do it myself, but I don't have an account on this wiki yet. -Anonymous

"Subsequent games revert to the Mario vs. Donkey Kong appearance"[edit]

I don't think this is a fair claim. While her most recent appearances have certainly reincorporated the vast majority elements of her Mario vs. Donkey Kong design, Odyssey inspirations are still evident -- specifically in her head shape, hairstyle, and skintone. Her MvDK era design depicts her as very pale, with a very tall face and dark brown hair. Her SMO design notably shrinks her forehead as well as the rest of her facial features in giving her more realistic proportions, as well as making her hair a lighter brown, giving her a more pointed chin, and a slightly darker skin tone. While she's made shorter and squatter to better match Peach and Rosalina, Tour does significantly more than just keeping her "smaller earrings", as her facial features are still shrunk to look more realistic on her face, and her dress is more sleek than can be seen in her SSB4 trophy, looking like a mixture between the original dress and her festival dress. Tennis enlargen her facial features again, but maintains the lighter hair, smaller forehead, pointed chin, and tanner skin. Golf's hair is back on the darker side, but the forehead, chin, and skintone adjustments are still present; same with Strikers.

It seems to me that a much more accurate statement would be that "Subsequent games bring back many elements of her Mario vs. Donkey Kong appearance, resulting in a mixture between the two designs." 73.171.36.107 20:53, July 17, 2023 (EDT)

Bumping this. I'd like to make the changes myself, but the page is locked. 73.171.36.107 14:54, August 24, 2023 (EDT)
