They lose their wings when they are stomped in the air, turning them into regular Koopa Troopas. Typically, Koopa Paratroopas are placed in large gaps where [[Mario]] and [[Luigi]] must stomp on rows of them to traverse a pit or reap other rewards. They traditionally come in two varieties: Red Koopa Paratroopas usually fly up and down in a set path, while Green Koopa Paratroopas often bounce in the player's general direction or fly back and forth, although many exceptions have been made to these rules. Koopa Paratroopas also appear as playable characters in various spin-off games, occasionally even appearing without a normal Koopa Troopa as a playable character; in these installments, the red Paratroopas are the default color, having appeared first, and the green Paratroopas are the alternate color, having appeared later. Their name comes from "paratrooper," a term used in the military to describe soldiers who parachute down to attack.

In ''[[The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!]]'', Koopa Paratroopas make only two appearances, in the episodes "[[King Mario of Cramalot]]" and "[[Princess, I Shrunk the Mario Brothers]]". In "King Mario of Cramalot", they drop a net on top of Mario, Luigi, Toad, [[Princess Peach|Princess Toadstool]] and [[Mervin]]. The Koopa Paratroopas are based off the show's Koopa Troopa design, except that they are depicted in shades of red while having wings similar to a bee's, rather than their usual feathered ones. Much like the Koopa Troopas that appeared in that same episode, the Koopa Paratroopas are dressed up as knights to fit the medieval setting of [[Cramalot]]. In "Princess, I Shrunk the Mario Brothers", when the Koopa Troopas are shrunk, one that is jumping has a pair of wings.

Paratroopa appears in ''[[Mario Party Advance]]'', where he is the owner of the only item shop in [[Shroom City (Mario Party Advance)|Shroom City]], [[Junk]], and the cousin of [[Koopa Troopa|Koopa]]. According to his description, he acts as a "big-brother type" and looks after the townsfolk. Paratroopa is one of the few characters to not give a quest, but he and his shop are involved in several other quests. If the store is entered while a relevant quest has not been taken, Paratroopa says that the shop is closed, but also that it is going to open soon.
