The name "Toothberry" comes from "tooth", as their mouths are armed with sharp teeth, and "berry", because they are small and the color scheme of common berries.

Concept artwork of two Toothberries and a Cageberry.

Toothberries are small, round creatures that appear in Donkey Kong Country Returns. These foes made their main appearance in Itty Bitty Biters. However, some Toothberries are also found in Clingy Swingy.

They attack by jumping up and biting the Kongs. In Itty Bitty Bitters, they come out of walls, statues, and floors too. The red Toothcherries are more aggressive than the blues, and jump higher. They also require more jumps to be defeated. The yellow Toothberries, known as Acks, appear as groups of five, and are piled on top of each other to form a wall. If the Kongs force them to attack, they'll dive down to the ground, and become vulnerable to jump attacks.

Another version, called Cageberries, are Toothberries trapped in cages. Despite being trapped, they can still jump with the cage protecting against any possible attack and harm the Kongs. Donkey Kong can, however, use the Ground Pound to flip the cage over and stun the Toothberry for a while. If he stands over the cage and does a another ground pound, the cage can act as a trampoline to make the primate jump higher than normal.

The name "Toothberry" comes from "tooth", as their mouths are armed with sharp teeth, and "berry", because they are small and the color scheme of common berries.

Trivia

  • Strangely, the concept artwork of a Toothberry depicts it without a nose, while its official artwork has a visible nose.
