In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, the Green Missile can be changed into one of the two custom variants, although they are locked first. One is the Floating Missile, which flies sideways in a straight line, while the other one is the Quick Missile, which flies faster and farther than normal. Both custom variants appear to deal less damage than the original variant.

Luigi and Princess Toadstool did a similar move in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! episode The Adventures of Sherlock Mario. Luigi and the princess used this move to hit two members of the Koopa Pack. This may have been an inspiration for the move, but it is unlikely. Additionally, Luigi uses a move similar to this in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games and Mario Sports Mix, and thus the move in these games may be inspired by the Green Missile.
