Chomps[1] are aggressive sharks that swim around the submerged levels of Donkey Kong Country. They resemble rather large tiger sharks that move slow enough for Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong to catch up to it and they bite a Kong to injure them. Chomps can only be defeated by using Enguarde the Swordfish. They can be found in Coral Capers, Clam City, and Croctopus Chase.
In the Club Nintendo comic "Donkey Kong Country," two Chomps try to attack Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong.
Several Chomps are seen in the trailer for Donkey Kong Racing in the background of the logo and underwater when Tiny Kong and Diddy Kong are riding on a regular Enguarde and a purple Enguarde. It is possible that Chomps were going to be one of the rideable creatures in this game seeing as another enemy species, Zingers were seen to be rideable.
In Donkey Kong Barrel Blast, a shark resembling a Chomps, though more manic and vicious looking, appears in an underwater race course as an obstacle.
