PeekaBoo in the game Luigi's Mansion.
PeekaBoo, one of the Boos in Luigi's Mansion.

During the events of Luigi's Mansion, Luigi releases fifty Boos (fifty-one including King Boo). He must then catch each one throughout the game. Thirty-five of the fifty regular Boos are named and each one always starts out in a particular room (the other fifteen form together to make Boolossus). Once Luigi uncovers a Boo, he must drain all of its HP with the Poltergust 3000 to capture it. Boos are capable of fleeing to other rooms, forcing Luigi to chase them down. Some Boos will tackle Luigi when threatened, while others will not. Luigi can still take damage from these on contact, however.

Luigi needs to catch 5 Boos to unlock the Washroom (1F). 20 of them need to be captured to access the Balcony (3F) and battle Boolossus. 40 of them need to be captured to fight King Boo. If Luigi manages to vacuum up all 50 Boos, the last one will drop a Gold Diamond.

The following chart shows each Boo, its amount of HP, whether or not it has the ability to attack, the room it starts out in, the different hiding places in that room and the object or saying that the said Boo is based on. Note that if the game is turned off before any particular Boo is caught, it will return to the room it started in with all its HP restored.

Trivia

  • If a Boo flees into a dark room or corridor where the lights have not been turned on, their HP will decrease significantly slower when using the Poltergust 3000. This adds to the fact that Boos are considered stronger in the dark.
  • The Boos with 300 HP have the second highest HP in the game, the next highest being King Boo, although these Boos are tied with the Clockwork Soldiers; when their HPs are combined, they have 300 HP.
  • All Boos have different names in foreign versions of the game.
  • If Luigi does not find the Boo's hiding place and finds another hiding place instead, then either a Boo Ball or a bomb will show up instead of the Boo.
  • Boos make a pun on every Game Boy system except the Game Boy Color, presumably because Game Boy Horror was already taken.
  • In Japanese versions, it's clear that Kung Boo, Boogie, GumBoo, Booligan, Booigi, Booffant and even Boolossus return in the sequel; in English versions, they were respectively renamed ComBooter, Boofoon, Boogie Woogie, Boolldog, MamBoo, Boo Boo and "Big Boo" for their reappearance.
  • It is possible to permanently lose the reward for capturing all Boos. If Luigi captures the 50th Boo and saves when prompted, then proceeds to collect the Gold Diamond without saving with a Toad afterward, he will lose all progress since capturing the Boo including obtaining the Gold Diamond. The diamond cannot be obtained again as the game remembers the Boo having already been captured.
