Squid Shots[1][2] are wooden turret machines appearing in Donkey Kong Country Returns and its port, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. They are short, cylindrical, have two built-in cannons on opposing sides, and are covered in starfishes and shells. They use Squidlys and sometimes Electrasquids as projectiles, and their firing line is always straight. A Squid Shot may have its own shooting pattern, sometimes depending on its position; some Squid Shots can be found stacked on top of each other. Squid Shots themselves are not harmful and can be stood on as on a solid platform, but are indestructible. They behave similar to Bill Blasters.
In-game, each Squid Shot is operated by a mysterious figure taking shelter inside the machine. Only its eyes can be seen as it looks through a hatch on the front of the Squid Shot. The direction its eyes are facing determines the direction it fires Squidlys/Electrasquids; if it is looking straight, it fires in both directions. However, the concept artwork depicts a Squid Shot being manned by a crab-looking creature, which could imply that Squid Shots could be operated by Snippys.
Squid Shots debut in the level Sloppy Sands of the Beach world, where they are widespread. They continue to appear in other levels of the Beach world, as well as in Tippy Shippy and Five Monkey Trial.
