Round and mushroom Goombas

Im mario party advance i saw both regular and round goombas, are them the same or separated species? Larry.gifAndré, Do your homework !!!

They go by the same name. There can be different varieties even when they're the same species. - Cobold (talk · contribs) 14:36, 27 August 2007 (EDT)

They're subspecies. I also read on Wikipedia that the round Goombas have a different name from the mushroom Goombas in Japan. Also The round Goombas look more like the mushroom Goombas in Super Mario Galaxy. In that game there's only three small differences, round Goombas are smaller, have proportionately smaller stems, and have rounded heads-Informant A.K.A. KP Shadow

Not to mention they can be killed with a single spin, and are more grey. They're the best ones! Jakeyboy01 16:02, 30 July 2008 (EDT)

Well, if we have separate articles for characters who have the same name in Japanese games but different ones in English games, I suppose the opposite would be true and we'd have an article on Roud Goombas. Stumpers! 18:25, 30 July 2008 (EDT)
We should. They seem to be the same species as from Mario Land and the Maio World games.

The round ones yield coins even when you spin them. But when you get them with a Star Bit, they turn dizzy like normal goombas. (I used to call them "Gooms"...) Big-bang

I always thought the Goomba's were the same sprites as mushrooms recolored and with added feet. That theory is supported by the fact that the mushrooms got rounder in SMW too. So my theory is that the Goomba's got rounder just to save work by making less sprites. User:FeyBart

Mushrooms in SMW aren't much "rounder" than they already were in SMB3. --Grandy02 12:41, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

Spelling error, sir. I meant, "Vegetales," a TV show in which sentient vegetables re-enact Bible stories... I'm not kidding. Anyway, they have no arms so they make things float like Goomba. Regardless, let's move this discussion to the forum, yes? Stumpers! 12:35, 1 August 2008 (EDT)

Right...anyway, I wanna talk about Magikoopa/Goomba baseball teams! Go the super combination! Oh, a thought...imagine if a Goomba was in M& S @ the Olympic Games. Thinking of a Goomba doing Archery and Fencing makes my head hurt. And Goomba Gymnastics...hahahahaha! User: Georgedrake Z

It's likely telekinesis. As from different media, Veggietales included, animated characters are able to move things as if they had arms. A magikoopa or ghost could not maneuver an item to act with a goomba and fake it. E.g. Super Sluggers. Goomba runs up to the plate, jumps and downward swings his bat as if it were an ax. No way a separate entity could make it look like the Goomba was doing it. That'd be some weird ventriloquist stuff.

More unusually, how does a paper Shy Guy hold an item while running without holding it? Its arms are by its side, and it walks around with an item on its head. Either the best balance of a game character ever, a sticky robe, or more telekinesis. Though, really, why analyze any part of this? Walking, jumping, rolling, living mushrooms that sing like woodwind instruments... and you wonder how the hold things. Honestly. GG445 Me! "...?" heiho! 17:13, 6 January 2013 (EST)

Goomba vs. Goomba

In "Goomba vs. Goomba", it says Goomboss returned. But wasn't that the first game he appeared in? And if Goombas are so vulnerable, could Mario rip them in half? I mean, they are paper. Plus, hearing "RRRRIPPP" might even be more satisfying than the usual "Brdonk!" sound effect. (How does Goomba put on his spikey hat???)
The preceding unsigned comment was added by Big-bang (talk).

Kamek does it for him. Or maybe Goomba used the Force like any 'armless Jedi (geddit??? 'Armless?) - Georgedrake Z

Enough about Kamek! He probably has a billion impaired minions at his house according to you guys!!! Big-bang 16:26, 11 November 2008 (EST)

To answer your questions, Goomboss's first appearance was in Paper Mario. He later appeared in Super Mario 64 DS, and many fans have speculated that the events of that game, overwriting the original Super Mario 64, means that Goomboss's first chronological appearance was Super Mario 64 DS. However, this is speculation and doesn't have a place in our articles, but rather on our forums (you should get an account if you're interested in theories and such, by the way). What the article should say is that he first appeared in Paper Mario and later in Super Mario 64 DS. For our purposes here we don't need to get into the nitty gritty details about whether or not Super Mario 64 DS did happen in place of SM64. As for the second question, Mario could not rip enemies in half in Paper Mario. The "paper" motif was simply an art style. However, in later installments of the Paper Mario series, the "paper" concept was used in interesting ways (turning sideways, etc.). Stumpers! 19:30, 11 November 2008 (EST)

Quote

I don't think the current quote really reflects Goombas' personality... anybody know any better quotes? Big-bang 18:40, 17 August 2008 (EDT)

If Goombas talked in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, I'd suggest using a quote from there (it's worked for Peach and Bowser so far... maybe it'll work for Goomba). I could also see using the Paper Mario tattles. Stumpers! 19:32, 11 November 2008 (EST)
“The Goombas have lost...Again?! Is this our destiny?! To be trampled by oppressive feet for all eternity? No, we will definitely triumph next time! The Goombas' fate is not defeat, but perseverance!”
Goomboss, Super Mario 64 DS
This used to be the main quote (credit to Blitzwing for finding it). Would anyone object to making it the main quote again? It describes Goombas a lot better than the current quote does. --KPH2293 12:16, 17 April 2009 (EDT)

Life-Span

I first heard the idea that Goombas had a shorter life-span than a human from a fanfiction by legendary Mario fanfiction authoress Chicken Miasma. At first, I disagreed due to lack of evidence, though the concept of a sentient race with a shorter life-span than a human (as opposed to longer, as is commonly seen in fantasy and sci-fi) was a concept I had dabbled in in a few of my original stories, and was thus familiar with.

However, just a few days ago I picked up my old Paper Mario N64 cartridge. Luckily, both cartridge, console, and controller were functional due to care of storage and usage.

Naturally, I was doing old Koopa Koot's Errands between chapters. And as is characteristic of old Koopa Koot, he is full of colorful saying. I payed them no mind at first, but one caught my notice...

I had reached the part of the game after Chapter 4, and I got around to doing that round of errands for Koopa Koot. Took care of the noisy Bob-ombs? Check. Got the old photo from the Boos (and was surprised it wasn't in black and white)? Check. But then I came upon the reqest for some Koopasta. Koopa Koot opened with saying: "I really haven't had a tasty meal in a Goomba's age."

Notice the saying. It is an obvious play on the old yet colorful phrase "I haven't done so-and-so in a dog's age". It is used to signify what feels like a very long time without mentioning exact time. Naturally, this saying is named so because dogs have a much shorter life-span than Humans.

So this got me wondering... If "Goomba" is used in place of "dog" in this phrase, does this mean that Goombas have a much shorter life-span than Humans? Or, possibly, shorter than a Koopa Troopa's life-span?

I doubt that a Goomba only lives about fourteen years like a domestic canine, but it is possibly short enough to be significant in comparison to other Mushroom World races.

Thoughts? Theories?

--Cyberweasel89 13:29, 11 January 2010 (EST)

It's an interesting observation you have there. It could just be a play on words, but on the same time it could mean that a Goomba has a shorter lifespan. Hello, I'm Time Turner.

Well, maybe it is a reference to the fact that most Goombas are killed by someone very quickly, so their average lifespan has functionally been reduced by the Mario Brothers. 4DJONG (talk)

Split Pumpkinhead Goomba/Jack O' Goomba from the Goomba Page

Template:SettledTPP Template:ProposalOutcome Currently, the Pumpkinhead Goomba, or known in SMG2, Jack O' Goomba, is merged into the Goomba page, because having unofficial name (creature was then known as just Pumpkin Head) and just be the same as a Goomba with head armor, which could be worn off with just a hit. I say that we should split it (again). Several reason are here to split it:

  • We now have an official name for the creature ("Jack O' Goomba"). Two, if you count "Pumpkinhead Goomba" official.
  • Eventually, these Goomba sub-species could spit blue fire, while normal Goombas don't.
  • The Pumpkinhead Goomba also made appearance in more than one game (a sequel, though).
  • Compare Pumpkinhead Goombas with Paragoombas:
    • Both have a new ability (Paragoombas could fly. In their debut, they could release Micro-Goombas, while, as a Goomba, not)
    • Both have an official name.
    • Both become the same creature when hit. And have we merged Paragoomba to Goomba? No.

That's why I want to split Pumpkinhead Goomba/Jack O' Goomba. Only problem is which name we should use. But, who's with me?

Super Mario Bros. Manual

I was reading this article, and noticed something. I am not sure if this is still cannon, as it is a little silly considering that Goombas now live as a separate, happy, race. But in the Super Mario Bros. manual does it not mention that Goombas are Toads that turned to Bowser's side and where transformed by a wizard or something. Have not read it in a long time, but that is how I remember it. Again, considering the stuff we see in Paper Mario etc, it is doubtful this is till cannon. --THE GMoD 14:13, 4 April 2011 (EDT)

Possible conflict

"Despite looking like Mushrooms, Goombas were based off chestnuts. This is most evident with the Goombas seen in Super Mario World." Goomboss quote

The quote for this is from Goomboss, shouldn't it be from a Goomba? I mean there are times when it talks like in the Mario Party series Yoshi876 (talk)

The quote doesn't always have to be directly spoken by the article subject. But it must be relevant. In this case, the quote gives an insight to the Goomba species.

Trophy Description Goomba - Brawl Trophy.png

Goomba

A citizen of the Mushroom Kingdom who sided with Bowser when he invaded. Goombas slowly chase after Mario on stubby legs. They're not the toughest creatures and can generally be defeated by jumping on them, which makes them disappear. They have fierce fangs, but they don't seem to serve any purpose. Though a nuisance to Mario, they're decent at baseball and mah-jongg.

I also realized that he, despite what some articles say, does not pilot the Megacrinkle Goomba Papercraft. In the dungeon, he says "It's me! The Goomba you battled twice back in Sunbeam Plains!" That's the first battle of the game and the stack boss. The Papercraft would be a third fight. Also, we need an image for his infobox. Should I just use the sprite for a generic Paper Goomba? You really need to let discussions play out instead of trying to rush proposals. Keep in mind that proposals aren't always necessary; for example, the suggested Flutter/Wiggler merge, which was resolved without the need for a proposal as a result of overwhelming opposition towards the idea. --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Split the Ice Skate and Swim Ring variants from this article

Template:SettledTPP Template:ProposalOutcome Regarding the above discussion, it's about those in Super Mario 3D World. They have different Japanese names, and functions. One is a chillin' Goomba on a spiked white swim-ring with red stripes, and the other is on an Ice Skate. They're clearly subspecies, and not just Goomba wearing a swim-ring and/or an Ice Skate. Depending on the consensus, i will vote for support if it will pass. They are named in the encyclopedia: Skate Goomba and Innertube Goomba, but since we can't cite the encyclopedia, we'd have to use identifiers. For consistency with Goomba's Shoe and Shoe Goomba. Additionally, if this proposal fails, we'll have to revisit the Goomba's Shoe and Shoe Goomba for consistency.

In the etymology section, it states that they are named after chestnuts because they "look more like chestnuts than shitake mushrooms." I think it's more likely just to be a reference to their color. There is a type of brown mushroom called Chestnut Mushrooms that look closer in shape to Goombas than the wide, flat tops of a shitake. They are called "kuribo kinoko" in Japanese, and are cultivated and eaten in Japan. --157.21.14.65 12:50, September 2, 2021 (EDT)

Are Goombas Mushrooms?

As I know from a fan base, Goombas are like mutant mushrooms. This makes me think that Goombas are Mushrooms. I want to know if this is true, because there were no instances in which any Goomba is called a Mushroom on purpose. I am holding a debate to decide whether or not this article should state that goombas are related to Mushrooms. Some reasons are:

  • Goombas look like mushrooms with feet.
  • Mushrooms have a round shape, like Goombas.
  • Koopa Troopas can be called turtles because they look like turtles.
  • Only Rotten Mushrooms and Zombie Mushrooms are technically mutant mushrooms, and it’s almost Halloween, so why not Goombas?

…Why does this need a proposal?

Why is the deadline in the Comments section?

What exactly do those points mean?

My head hurts from looking at this. Somethingone (talk) 17:05, October 8, 2021 (EDT)

The article already says that Goombas resemble Shiitake mushrooms, which I think is good enough. This proposal honestly doesn't make much sense to me. Mario jumping Nightwicked Bowser Bowser emblem from Mario Kart 8 17:28, October 8, 2021 (EDT)
I wanted to see if Goombas can be considered mushrooms, for I was going to make a Halloween picture of a Goomba.

Now I'm even more confused. When you say "mushroom," do you mean the generic group of organisms or the item? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 18:56, October 8, 2021 (EDT)
