Talk:Main Page
Blurry images
Images on this wiki are showing up really blurry and pixelated to me, as if they're all really bad JPG images, but just the thumbnails. Why is this happening? It's been like this for many months now. Shadow2 (talk) 23:49, 1 December 2018 (EST)
- They look fine on my end (and they are JPGs, anyway). Are you zoomed in or out? Sometimes that causes images to appear jagged. 00:24, 2 December 2018 (EST)
Add a New Pages template to the main page
Template:SettledTPP Template:ProposalOutcome There is one thing that everyone sees when they enter the MarioWiki: The main page. The page is organized and includes trivia, the best articles on the site, news etc. However, under the Did You Know? template there is a large amount of empty space, a perfect place for a new template. The template that I am proposing is a template that, whenever a new page is created, the template will be updated containing a short 1-3 sentence paragraph summarizing the start of the page, preferably took directly from the page. The template would be called New Pages. This idea was approved by Porplemontage. This template would be a auto-comfimed only regularly updated template like the {{News}} template where, whenever a new page is published, a brief summery with a link to the article will be added as the top bullet, as shown above. The rules of this template would be the following:
- When a new page is published, a brief 1-3 sentence paragraph summarizing the start of the page, preferably took directly from the start of the page, will be used as a bullet point on the template. (Model A only) The page's main image will be pictured in a maximum 150px image.
- (Model A only) Even if the latest page does not have an image at the time of release, Model A will still only have one bullet.
- If an article is deemed too short or is badly written, then the article can be skipped.
- The template has two bullets in Model B, one in Model A, and whenever a new page is published the article is mention on the first bullet on the top of the template, with the oldest page's bullet point being removed.
- Every paragraph should end with the code: '''[[pagename|Read more...]]'''.
- The page's name should be linked and bolded.
As mentioned in the rules, there is two models that could work, because, as mentioned by Porplemontage, there is only enough space for either one bullet and an image, or two bullets with no image. Here is an example of how both models would look like:
Model A:
Safe Buster (pictured) is a dual-screen Game & Watch game that was originally released on January 6, 1988. It is featured as an unlockable minigame in Game & Watch Gallery 4. In the game, a character named the Wily Bomber is dropping bombs onto a safe in a bank, and the player as the bank guard must catch them in a container. Read more...
Model B:
- Safe Buster (pictured) is a dual-screen Game & Watch game that was originally released on January 6, 1988. It is featured as an unlockable minigame in Game & Watch Gallery 4. In the game, a character named the Wily Bomber is dropping bombs onto a safe in a bank, and the player as the bank guard must catch them in a container. Read more...
- Bomb Sweeper is a dual-screen Game & Watch game that was originally released on June 15, 1987, and is featured as an unlockable minigame in Game & Watch Gallery 4. In my opinion, Model B is better, as while images are nice, not all pages immediately has an image when created, and two bullets can encourage more activity improving new pages than with just a single bullet. Still, this template could not only fill in space on the Main Page, but it could also encourage the creation of pages and the improvement of said pages.
EDIT:Per Alex95's suggestion, {{Special:NewPages|limit=2}} could also work, although in my opinion having a 1-3 sentence paragraph would better help readers get interested with the page than just the edit log, however it is still a viable option, so adding {{Special:NewPages|limit=2}} as option C. (As this Model would update automatically none of the other rules apply) This Model would look like this:
- 02:27, November 12, 2024 Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story clothing names in other languages (hist | edit) [1,914 bytes] Drake Inferno (talk | contribs) (Dumping my table of names into a page. Add the Model A version of the New Pages template (One bullets and an image)
Add the Model B version of the New Pages template (Two bullets and an image)
- Niiue (talk) Per Doomhiker.
- FanOfYoshi (talk) Per all.
- GrainedCargo192 (talk) This might actually make it worth it to check out the main page.
#Doomhiker (talk) My preferred option, per proposal.
Add the ModelC version of the New Pagestemplate ({{Special:NewPages|limit=2}})
Oppose (Do not add a New Pages template in any capacity)
- Waluigi Time (talk) I'm not entirely keen on the idea of a trivial feature constantly being edited while we're trying to cover newly released games.
- Toadette the Achiever (talk) It just seems like too much trouble to implement.
- 7feetunder (talk) Per Bazooka Mario's comment below. Too much effort for too little gain. If we really wanted to fill out that empty space, we could just make the "Mario & Nintendo News" section longer or something.
- Yoshi the SSM (talk) Per 7feetunder. Plus, this only benefits desktop viewers, but not mobile viewers (since it would add to the list instead of equaling the other side). I like 7feetunder idea of how we could remove the added space, but we could either just extend a template (though, that still leaves space, but is part of the template too, and maybe not as preferred) or add something that viewers would be interested in (maybe something like the feature media from the DK wiki that is being merge (in the present) with this wiki). These two are just other two possibilities, but 7feetunder's option is both removes the space altogether and is easy to implement.
- Bazooka Mario (talk) I don't think it's needed nor does it provide much benefits for its price of extra maintenance.
- Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) While the usefulness exists, it is quite slim, can be seen through a button that's already on the wiki, and isn't pretty by any means. The main page should at least look good.
- BBQ Turtle (talk) Per all, I think it'd be a bit too difficult to decide when to update, plus the space it would occupy drastically varies in size, at least on my laptop, depending on the length of the Did You Know? and Mario & Nintendo News sections- sometimes it has lots of space, and other times it goes below the 'Shroom box- if the News, Did You Know and this were all long, it wouldn't save space and may then create an issue of more empty space on the left.
- TheFlameChomp (talk) Per all. While it could have some usefulness, I feel that the extra maintenance would be an issue, along with the fact that the empty space is not the same across browsers.
- Doomhiker (talk) Per all.

Does it need the "Read more..." if the article is already linked to by name?
Also, hey, figured out something that could maybe also work :P

- In my opinion having a 1-3 sentence paragraph would better help readers get interested with the page than just the edit log, and the reason that I added the "Read more..." so that if a user is new they may not know that blue=link so having an obvious link to the page would help attract new readers. Doomhiker (talk) 15:41, 10 January 2019 (EST)
- I'm not sure having part of a behind-the-scenes log on the wiki's main page is a good idea, especially since users can type anything in the summary. Mario JC 06:42, 11 January 2019 (EST)
- I feel that using behind-the-scenes logs instead of summaries could end up being confusing for people who are just here to read, while also being way less descriptive. --TheFlameChomp (talk) 11:09, 11 January 2019 (EST)
So would this have to be updated every time a new page is created? What about when new games are released and articles are constantly being made for its content? -- Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 11:40, 11 January 2019 (EST)
- @Waluigi Time it would have to be updated every time a new page is created, even when new games release. It would be the responsibility of the user who made the page, or another user if the user does not do so, to update the template. However, unlike the news and DYK template which require a large amount of effort to maintain, this template would really only need a copy-and-paste of the first few sentences of the page with extra code added and extremely minor adjustments. Doomhiker (talk) 14:22, 11 January 2019 (EST)
- I personally do not think that updating it every single time a new page is created in situations such as that is necessary, as sometimes, multiple articles are created in a span of several minutes, and it does not seem necessary to have to update it every few minutes when it will quickly be updated again (especially if the user is unaware that they have to do it). --TheFlameChomp (talk) 16:29, 11 January 2019 (EST)
- @TheFlameChomp I agree, and in one of the rules If an article is deemed too short or is badly written, then the article can be skipped. Perhaps I can modify that rule so it also includes Also, if a large amount of new pages are created in a short time span due to a new game or another major event, the updating of this template can be temporarily set aside until page creation is slowed down to a normal pace. Doomhiker (talk) 16:53, 11 January 2019 (EST)

This seems like a lot of maintenance and trouble (via new quality standards that prompts a new discussion) to go through for a small spot on the main page where only a fraction of readers will be pretty invested on. Unlike the other spots, this section isn't going to be updated on a schedule. It'll require constant watch on part of the recent changes. I really don't see the benefit for this for all this trouble aside from general aesthetics of the new page. I think there are other ways we can minimize empty space on the page; this appears to be just padding. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 00:28, 15 January 2019 (EST)
Character article infobox discrepancies
Okay, this has been bugging me even more so now. On a certain character article on this wiki that I will not name here, I was kindly trying to tell the respective parties that in terms of appearances, it's in regards to the game installment that they first appeared in. But the other editor begs to differ and says it's in regards to their first/latest appearances overall. Can anyone clarify on this and confirm if the character article infoboxes are mainly in regards to game installments only? --M. C. - Profile | Talk Page 13:39, 9 February 2019 (EST)
- The infoboxes first and latest appearance should be their first/latest appearances overall as those are their first/latest appearance, even if it is not in a game, although articles should also note a thing's first game appearance in an infobox. Doomhiker (talk) 13:46, 9 February 2019 (EST)
Easter Egg on the Super Mario Wiki discovered?
I found this a while ago, but decided to mention it today. If you go to the BJAODN section of the Super Mario Wiki, the wiki's logo will change to one that somewhat resembles Wikipedia's, except the logo includes Mario's eyes, nose, and mustache, the letters are replaced with Mario-themed stuff, and the text is written with the old Mario-style letters. See for yourself: https://www.mariowiki.com/MarioWiki:BJAODN
This easter egg also appears on every subpage of BJAODN (with the exception of those that feature an edited wiki that stars another character, as is the case of the April Fools 2017 and 2018 subpages) Speaking of April Fools, I believe that the April Fools subpages should have their own category, rather than being part of the Complete "articles", can someone do it if they agree with that? Why does the search function suck?
I have noticed that the search function on MarioWiki really doesn't work very well. Or, at least, it doesn't function like most other sites' search functions and ends up usually not being helpful. For example, I searched for "Mario Party 3 Credits" once because at the time, I couldn't remember the exact title of the page. What are the results of this search?
...etc, etc, just a long list of popular, or often visited, pages that just happen to contain "Mario" within them somewhere. This doesn't help at all. I find that nine times out of ten, the pages for Mario, Luigi, DK and for some reason "List of Items" will always be at the top of the search results. So, what's wrong with it? Shadow2 (talk) 06:18, September 10, 2020 (EDT)
- Well, the credits page does not actually have the word "credits" anywhere in the page. So that will definitely play a part in search never bringing that up. List of Mario Party 3 staff. Paper Jorge (Talk·Contribs)
- When you search, the results will only list pages containing all the words in your search. To avoid the type of results you got, try searching "Mario Party 3" in quotes, without "credits" because that word isn't present (we use "staff"). You'll then see all pages containing Mario Party 3 in the title.

- I understand your points, but I still think there's something not quite right. I'm comparing this to search functions on other Wikis, including Wikipedia, and none of those wikis will always spit out the same list of articles if it can't find one with a matching title. On other wikis if you search for something it'll give you stuff that's at least a little close, but this wiki will always give me "Mario" "Luigi" "List of items" every single time. This gives the impression to the user (me) that the search function is broken. You go to the Zelda wiki or something, and "Link" doesn't show up at the top of every single possible search result. Shadow2 (talk) 19:46, September 10, 2020 (EDT)
- What would be a good search function (to me) would be a thing that you could toggle in the settings. The thing that you could toggle would be acrually two things: The ability to search for just the phrase and not it jumbled up, and the ability to be able to search d and have articles that included d also as part of a word than just seperately. By the way, it was really hard to phrase this. --DarkNight 19:58, September 10, 2020 (EDT)

Citation format
Hey fellas, didn't know where to ask. We borrow a citation format from Wikipedia, but there is a huge discrepancy on the entire wiki on whether citations go after the period, or before the period. Wikipedia places the citations after the period. Our official MarioWiki:Citations page tells us to put it before the period. Most our articles have the citations after the period which is supposedly wrong (don't believe me? look up any major article, Mario, Yoshi, Bowser and just CTRL+F [1] [2]). Our sysops have been enforcing the citation before the period on new articles, as I've noticed Alex95 doing when I was writing the Steve (Minecraft) article. But it's causing a major discrepancy and I just wanted to bring it up. Personally, I think it should be after the period, it looks neater, but whatever is chosen, there is no standard right now. Non-Japanese/English voice actors in infoboxes
I'm not sure if this was already discussed among the admins, but I think this should be discussed publicly. There was an anon adding names of voice actors for characters originating from other franchises such as Sonic in languages besides Japanese and English. My question is should we keep those or remove them. Personally, my concern about this practise is that it's not really that consistent with the rest of the wiki, with every other infobox listing English/Japanese actors only (which is possible could be the only voice actors), and I feel it clutters them a bit. Nightwicked Bowser 19:49, February 9, 2021 (EST)
- We talked about it on the admin and the discord and found the 3DS version of M&S 2016 does have dubbed voice clips for languages beside English and Japanese (specifically French, Spanish, German and Italian,), so the voice actor information warrants to be listed somewhere - for the characters that appear in that, game for those languages.
Now the following two thoughts (these are not admin teams concensus)
-For the sake of avoiding clutter, I feel infoboxes should only list the source language of a given media, and English. If the source language is English, then only that.
-Information about dubs beside English and Japanese should be mentioned somewhere. There's no reason to. My favoured approach would be in the "List of portrayals" sections seen on some character pages. --Glowsquid (talk) 21:14, February 9, 2021 (EST)
- Seconded; if anything in terms of the infobox for character articles, I think it should be listing the English voice artists only. For those that have voice artists in other language, I think it should be under a sub-section under "List of portrayals" in character articles after the English ones have been listed first (when it is really necessary). --M. Considering
I've been considering to create a SSB proposal where instead of asking to further simplify and/or delete, it allow for allowing more SSB coverage. I thought about this a bit... The Super Smash Bros. series title is a pun on Super Mario Bros..... in the English language, that is, and while it's not the case in Japanese, this is still an English-speaking wiki & many are familiarized with Mario being the flagship of not only Nintendo but the main representative of the overall SSB series, especially the earlier installments with fewer third-party characters. In this regard I consider Super Smash Bros. a "related series" to the Mario franchise (whereas Zelda & Kirby, for example, are obviously their own thing). I just wanted to get feedback on this idea for a proposal before putting it into practice. It's also the main resource for casual SSB players not only in NIWA but online in general. Results May Vary (talk) 10:18, April 12, 2022 (EDT)
- Smash coverage is a majorly polarizing aspect of this wiki, so if you're going to seriously suggest that we undo all that progress we've made toward limiting our Smash coverage in favor of treating the series as full-on Mario titles and fully covering it then you'd better be ready for the floodgates to open. I, for one, vehemently oppose. I'd rather do the exact opposite and get rid of our non-Mario coverage of Smash (or spin it off to a new wiki or something). I posted several comments on that proposal I just linked explaining why, but I think Glowsquid's comment sums it up better. 11:06, April 12, 2022 (EDT)
- I mean I have relocated a lot of the content elsewhere (user page could point in the right direction), but I'm infamous around NIWA, so that's a problem when it comes to directly connecting it to Mario Wiki. Know what I mean? Results May Vary (talk) 11:20, April 12, 2022 (EDT)
- Can't say I do know what you mean about your alleged "infamy". It's not a good excuse for dumping the content here regardless. 12:39, April 12, 2022 (EDT)
- Yeah I just meant if the SSB coverage issue were brought up again, the current solution to it might not be ideal as it not a full replication of the Mario Wiki style. This is because it's a Miraheze wiki (I can't afford to host wikis anymore) and I don't plan to move it off or try & have it inducted in NIWA or be hosted by Grifkuba (long story). That's why I figured the representation of casual SSB within NIWA would mainly be done from the Mario Wiki itself. Results May Vary (talk) 12:53, April 12, 2022 (EDT)

Hey, I think it's time we develop an infobox for movies, with the upcoming Mario movie and whatnot. I would make it myself but I get a little confused by how to make a template. That editing field...
I think several of us agree that the background we're using for editing is.... not the greatest. There has been proposed changes to it in our Discord channel, such as changing the images or removing it all together and simply having a blank background. I don't think it hurts to have a bit of flavor, but I wonder what images we should settle on before we fire a proposal. I also decided to at least have a discussion here just so people without a Discord and those editing the wiki DO get a chance to discuss any changes and whatnot. There are several group images I like to share below.
- Image 1
This is a good one since all major series stars are here. There's one issue: there's no alpha channel. (Yes Mario and Waluigi, I know you're disappointed, but don't blame Koopa con Carne this time, blame Nintendo) However I do think we can resolve this easily, doesn't seem like a difficult job to remove it; we'll probably be editing the image anyway to wash it out for the sake of good contrast with what's more important, the functionality of the editing field). Other issues do include lack of bigger players like Daisy, Rosalina, and the powerups (but to be fair, we already have powerups scattered on the sidebar anyway). I would go for this one, but I'd really like Rosalina and Daisy on there. Can't have everything.
Here's a mockup I did for a potential new background
Image that replaces the source image (yes it is a jpg ) |
---|
|
Here is a mockup of the new background if we successfully replace it |
---|
|
And here's a source png with the background white removed. I'd rather we don't pad out the image with this white space and use css functions to arrange the image at the bottom, but I'm not a css wizard at all, I just know how to inspect element and stuff |
---|
|
- Image 2
This one is good too since it encompasses the entire playable cast of the initial release of Strikers Battle League minus Donkey Kong a rich line up of Mario characters and powerups, but there's one issue: there's no alpha channel. Also, the lack of Donkey Kong should be an issue because we do cover the DK series in full so I feel Donkey Kong should have to be here. I figure a mockup would look pretty similar to the first attempt, so I'm not going to attempt it here.
- Image 3
And this last one does have the big benefit of an alpha channel, but it's held back by a more limited cast with no Wario despite their series being prominent part of MarioWiki.
As for the future, well, there might be new an improved group art, but as far as goes, the 2D stuff should be more future-proof than 3D. We really shouldn't be using GCN-era renders though, especially when those three images don't even belong in the same game as each other, and one isn't a stock image of Mario, but clearly identified as artwork from 2000s. Thanks, FLUDD.
Anyway, before I try carrying out a proposal, I'd like to see any more candidates for an editing field, and we can narrow down to a few, if any, so we don't overwhelm voters with all these options. Also suggestions for adjustments to the image is fine before I file it for a proposal. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 03:51, May 30, 2022 (EDT)
Comments for editing field
Image 3 definitely NatsMario 03:55, May 30, 2022 (EDT)
I'm of the sentiment that having an editing background is pretty pointless, particularly because any images would need to be transparent hard enough just to permit the editing text to be visible at all times. It just wouldn't look good to see, and as a result I don't see a reason to have another editing background that will have to be adjusted and be very faint to see. That being said, I think Image 1 looks the best, as it contains the primary cast of Mario-related characters. -- PanchamBro (talk • contributions) 04:14, May 30, 2022 (EDT)
- I like it because it adds a subtle accent (similar to the background in our proposals-space, as tacky as that one is) and it does help distinguish the field from the rest of the interface a bit. Our wiki looks, admittedly, plain and minimalist at points, but maybe an accent here will help it keep it a little more unique compared to other wikis aesthetics-wise. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 04:19, May 30, 2022 (EDT)
- Now I changed my mind image 2 is good because of Mario Strikers: Battle League NatsMario 04:21, May 30, 2022 (EDT)
I think Image 2 is pretty good, since it contains most of the major characters and enemies of the franchise, though I can rarely even see that edit background image. Most of the time, it's blocked by a ton of words. WildWario (talk) 04:33, May 30, 2022 (EDT)
- It's definitely a good lineup but it just irritates me that DK is missing, and DK content takes up a big chunk of the wiki. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 04:37, May 30, 2022 (EDT)

List of games by date link contains... malware??
I was reading an article (Fliprus to be specific) and clicked on the link in the infobox that takes you to the list of games by date when my antivirus software aborted connection to due it being infected with "URL:Phishing". Was this a mistake, a hack or something else? An explanation would be greatly appreciated. Yours truly, Princess Toadstoo-- I mean NintendoFan08. 09:56, December 27, 2022 (EST)
New console
I heard there is a new console coming out in 2023-2024. SONIC123CDMANIA+&K(B&ATSA) (talk) 13:21, March 1, 2023 (CST)

- This brings up a good question. 2 sections ago, NintendoFan08 talked of a new 2D Super Mario game within that same year period. Would this game be for this new console, if both turn out to be correct? SONIC123CDMANIA+&K(B&ATSA) (talk) 14:39, March 2, 2023 (CST)

- That is true. Now what? Yours truly, RetroNintendo2008. 09:17, May 7, 2024 (EDT)
- Exactly! Now what? We wait, or make a page, or what? SONIC123CDMANIA+&K(B&ATSA) (talk) 09:51, May 7, 2024 (EDT)
- Personally, I don't think we need to do anything right now. Knowing it is real doesn't necessarily mean we need to jump at an article right away. We still know next to nothing concrete about it, pretty much everything that's "known" are still just rumors. I think it's best to just wait until they officially show it off before we do anything. That's just my take though, I know we have an article on the Mario Movie follow-up with next to no real info. Tails777 Talk to me!
- I say we use that Mario Movie follow-up article as a base. SONIC123CDMANIA+&K(B&ATSA) (talk) 09:59, May 7, 2024 (EDT)
- How exactly is that going to work? All Nintendo have said is that they're going to announce it in the fiscal year so I agree with Tails777 that it's way too soon to create an article about it and we should wait until they do give us more info about it, preferably once we know what Mario-related games are coming out for it. Nightwicked Bowser 10:40, May 7, 2024 (EDT)
- But the Mario Movie follow-up isn't until 2026! That's farther than "this fiscal year". SONIC123CDMANIA+&K(B&ATSA) (talk) 10:59, May 7, 2024 (EDT)
- There's at least some information about the Mario movie follow up: directors, writers, etc (though I'll admit, I personally think even that was a bit too soon for an article). All we know about this console is that it's a thing. And Nightwicked Bowser also brings up a good point in that we don't even know what Mario games would be announced for it. I still think waiting further is the right move; once we actually see it and what games would be involved, then we can create an article. Tails777 Talk to me!
- Ok, yes, we don't know what games would be announced for it, but can't we just use the official information we DO have? No speculation, just official information, like we did with the Mario Movie follow up. SONIC123CDMANIA+&K(B&ATSA) (talk) 11:14, May 7, 2024 (EDT)
- We got nothin'. Ultimately, it's not a race to make the article. If it were made, it would actually be a stub, because it would basically be "Here's this thing. It's not a thing yet, but it's an idea." And we don't need an article on an idea. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 11:18, May 7, 2024 (EDT)
- Again, all they've said is that they'll formally announce it soon. That's not enough for a whole new article. Nightwicked Bowser
- I got the announcing thing, but seriously, should we just have an admin delete the Mario Movie follow-up page based on Doc's argument? SONIC123CDMANIA+&K(B&ATSA) (talk) 11:23, May 7, 2024 (EDT)
- No; the difference being that we have plenty of information regarding the second Mario movie such as the director, writer, release date etc, whereas we still know next-to-nothing about the Switch 2. Yours truly, RetroNintendo2008. 13:58, May 7, 2024 (EDT)
- But it's still a stub, which according to both wiki policy & Doc's argument means that it should be deleted. SONIC123CDMANIA+&K(B&ATSA) (talk) 14:04, May 7, 2024 (EDT)
- There's really no point in deleting it when we're just gonna create the same article again once another announcement is made. Princess Peach: Showtime! started out just the same for instance (I should know, I created the article). Yours truly, RetroNintendo2008. 15:14, May 7, 2024 (EDT)
- No, I mean deleting it UNTIL A ACTUAL TRAILER COMES OUT! SONIC123CDMANIA+&K(B&ATSA) (talk) 15:15, May 7, 2024 (EDT)
- That's what I mean; trailers are essentially a form of announcements for films. Yours truly, RetroNintendo2008. 15:17, May 7, 2024 (EDT)

How weird!
It is unusual for the wiki to use Emojis, I found one on the microgame Apple Blaster --AJOMarioWiki (talk) 16:29, November 17, 2023 (EST)
Apparently the Microgame uses an apple ICON rather than the word apple in traditional WarioWare style so the editors used the emoji. But yes, the wiki does not use emojis at all otherwise. P.S. Also, it might have been better to say this on the talk page of the article rather than the talk page of this one. Wonder Time!
Very funny.., VERY funny, guys…
That’s not sarcasm, I actually was almost convinced that the April Fool’s Joke was real for a second there. Wonder Time!
Redesign main page?
In my sandbox, I've been drafting up a new main page design. The reasons are as follows:
- The headings (e.g. Community, Featured article) were too colorful, clashing with the wiki's background, logo, and overall aesthetic, so I opted to make them a bit less bright.
- There's now a graphic of Mario to the left and Luigi to the right, welcoming users to the wiki. This could be changed to some other graphic, if needed.
- The references list is a mainspace article, but it was grouped in with non-mainspace links like proposals. It is now with groups of wiki coverage (e.g. Characters, Items).
- More prominent accessibility of social platforms, which are grouped together, and a distinct window for navigating pages of the wiki itself.
- There's more breathing room for lists, now that they're added into a designated "Explore" section. For example, one can see that an Objects as well as a Terms page is missing, which could not have been added easily using the previous design.
- The windows on the left and right sides (below the intro and social links) are integrated into one (e.g. Featured article and The Shroom are part of the same window, not separate), showing fewer 2px borders on the page. However, the "Explore" and "Navigate" are still presented separately.
- Removed the link to the coverage page, since "Super Mario and more" is vague, and Yoshi, DK, Wario, Peach, Captain Toad, and so forth are subsets of the Super Mario franchise.
Just wondering what the community here thinks about my drafted main page design, or even add some suggestions, and perhaps it can then become the subject of a proposal. Super Mario RPG (talk) 12:36, May 14, 2024 (EDT)
- Honestly, this doesn't actually look that bad. It's far from perfect— the links tab feel a bit cramped and the empty space next to The 'Shroom feels out of place —but overall, this has some serious potential. Yours truly, RetroNintendo2008. 02:55, May 15, 2024 (EDT)
- The colors are too subdued for a wiki about a franchise this whimsical; they’re better suited for a general knowledge base that promotes itself on its library-esque qualities, like Wikipedia, and I think the sharp reds, greens, and blues work much better with the colors established for the Mario brand, as seen in its logo and other kinds of official imagery. The contents in the Explore tab should be at the top as the point of that index is to be a quick portal for readers to lists and categories and needs to be among the first things one sees. I don’t have an opinion on anything else. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 04:56, May 15, 2024 (EDT)
- @Koopa con Carne Yeah, to be honest, I do see what you mean about how the colors may feel a bit washed out. I wonder if there's a midway point between the current colors used on the main page and the ones as seen in the sandbox (perhaps Super Mario logo or official website can give some pointers). Would you want the content navigation links and the meta/social media links switching positions? Helps having the proposals, social platforms, and all together for one easy point of accessibility. I wonder if there can be an X social platform embed for SMwikiofficial? Super Mario RPG (talk) 08:40, May 15, 2024 (EDT)
- @RetroNintendo2008 Glad you like it. This was my first draft, so it's not me presenting the finalized form of how the main page would look. As stated just now, perhaps there can be an X social platform embed to help with the empty space. Super Mario RPG (talk) 08:40, May 15, 2024 (EDT)
- @Super Mario RPG Yeah, this concept has a long way to go if it's gonna be implemented. Also, I agree with Koopa con Carne; keeping the bright colours is probably the best idea since it works a lot better than the washed-out ones. In addition, I'm not really a fan of the bullet points being used on the links tab, it looks out-of-place and is part of why I think it looks cramped. Yours truly, RetroNintendo2008. 11:13, May 15, 2024 (EDT)
- @RetroNintendo2008 What other improvements do you suggest? I will say that the bullet points are used in the current main page design, but they're not so closely packed together. I've updated the colors to those akin to the Super Mario franchise logo, and attempted some more organizational improvements, like social platforms, navigating this wiki's content, and pages about the wiki itself. Super Mario RPG (talk) 13:42, May 15, 2024 (EDT)
- Well, the issue regarding the links tab doesn't appear to be present (plus I completely forgot the current one uses it too, guess it's just down to how it's organised), but I'd suggest making the Twitter, Facebook and Discord links just the icons to make them more compact. I'd also recommend moving Terms and NIWA Central to Navigate since it looks out of place with the mainspace articles. Yours truly, RetroNintendo2008. 16:46, May 15, 2024 (EDT)
- Yeah, some of them are just placeholders: the Terms (which is "exploring" the Super Mario terms, so I'd have thought it'd have relevance) and NIWA Central, since I've been trying to occupy as much of the empty space as I could while presenting. The "Navigate" window was intended for on-site usage itself, but NIWA is offsite, so that makes it tricky, and the NIWA front page isn't a social media site. See, there's kind of a dilemma regarding that. Perhaps it can ultimately be integrated into the NIWA template (the front page of their site).
- Anyway, I'm digressing too much. Is there anything else you want me to improve, aside from the icons and moving the Terms and NIWA central link? I can't adjust the NIWA template, so someone else will have to add the front page link in there, if doable, for accessibility to their hub. Are the colors on my main page design now okay? Super Mario RPG (talk) 16:59, May 15, 2024 (EDT)
- Is there a reason you believe the main page should be redesigned? It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 20:16, May 16, 2024 (EDT)
- @Mario I listed a few factors for consideration on the first post above. It's mostly about reorganizing how everything is displayed, like the social media links, and that I think the colors of the headings are a bit too bright and need to be toned down a bit. Super Mario RPG (talk) 20:24, May 16, 2024 (EDT)
- I'm someone who has zero issues with the lesser color saturation of the headers (though I would strongly prefer if you kept the same color scheme for the tabs as the current main page) and I'm not a giant fan of the highly saturated colors we use, I think it contrasts poorly against a primarily white wiki that uses plenty of muted colors. I don't really have much more comments aside from that though, sorry if I can't give more feedback. Ray Trace(T|C) 21:29, May 16, 2024 (EDT)
- @Ray Trace Okay, I've changed it for consistency. How does it look now? I do agree with the bright colors contrasting with the wiki design, so that's why I brought it up. Just noticed I swapped around The Shroom and MW Encyclopedia, probably since (assuming the reader looks from top left to bottom right, as if reading pages of the book), they're more likely to check out The Shroom than MW Encyclopedia. Super Mario RPG (talk) 21:59, May 16, 2024 (EDT)
- I'm not sure if "navigate" section is needed. I do think it's a bit better we have social media spots in one spot with X, Discord, the forums, and IRC there; they used to be a bit out-of-the way and I actually didn't use the forums right away when I registered back in like late 2009 since I wasn't even aware of its existence. The Mario and Luigi graphics are cute, but others might think it's tacky (but honestly Mario and friends are a tacky bunch). Not sure about the color choices too (I do prefer pastel colors) or the font choice. Not a fan of how featured article and community poll are under one cell and then news and did you know too, like they should be separate cells. To be honest Im not sure if we entirely need a UI change since visitors already probably developed muscle memory for locations of the links (I did anyway) and while the relocation for "navigate" isn't a deal breaker, I'm not sure the immediate benefit of moving them away from the introduction. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 11:50, May 17, 2024 (EDT)
- @Mario This is certainly a complicated process, since everyone seems to have a different idea of changes that can be done to the main page. From the people I've talked to, all of them agree at least one thing could be changed (like the social links is a popular one). How would we even reach consensus, or even make a proposal on it, since there could be like 15 different options if such a proposal were to be created? Super Mario RPG (talk) 12:54, May 17, 2024 (EDT)

Redesign the main page
This talk page section contains an unresolved talk page proposal. Please try to help and resolve the issue by voting or leaving a comment. |

On the above section, I had begun a talk page discussion asking if the Main Page should be redesigned. From the users I've talked to, or feedback that I've received, each person thinks that at least one thing could be improved with the main page, the most popular being the organization of the social links, such as Discord, the forums, and X social platform.
If the "Support a full redesign" option passes, we can proceed to overhaul the main page entirely, based on the design shown in my sandbox, but a follow-up proposal will likely be required to establish which changes to my proposed design will be integrated into the main page, since some think my proposed design needs some tweaking. For comparison, my proposal on creating citation templates from a few months ago set such a precedent, where agreement was to create a citation template, but since clear guidelines on how the template would be designed hadn't been made, a follow-up proposal had to be created, which someone else was kind enough to do.
Some don't want a full redesign, but rather just one or a few changes, the popular choices being to make the heading colors less saturated or to relocate the social links. To accommodate, I've made options for either option or both. If either of the aforementioned three options wins, the only change that would occur to the main page is changing either the heading colors to make them less saturated, relocate the social media links, or both.

Support a full redesign
- Super Mario RPG (talk) As proposer
- RetroNintendo2008 (talk) I prefer the sleeker look the redesign has. With some minor changes later on, this could become arguably better than the current one. Nothing is lost or added in this, so as long as it stays faithful to the original, I'm on board with this.
- MegaBowser64 (talk) Provided this proposal is just to decide on whether we will redesign the main page at all, I'm in support. Generally I like the proposed redesign, but I have a few critiques. Per all.
- SONIC123CDMANIA+&K(B&ATSA) (talk) Per everyone here. The main page, while good, needs changing.
Only change the heading colors to something less saturated and relocate social links
Only change the headings to something less saturated
- Pseudo (talk) This aids with accessibility, but I’m not in favor of the redesigned header, as I feel it unnecessarily splits up information currently present and readily available on the main page.
- DrippingYellow (talk) Most of the proposed changes to the layout aren't just pointless, I feel like they're worse than the current Main Page, even when taking into account that the sandbox is a work-in-progress. The proposal seems to be trying to give the navigation and exploration options the same amount of screen real estate as the featured article and "Did you know..." section. Immediately, this makes it so that the actual showcases of the wiki's content (the featured article and news) is pushed down to make way for the unnecesarily spaced out wall of text. And it's small text too, nothing like the big text in the current main page that provides a good explorational hub without taking up a whole column (upsizing the text here would only push it down further).
The distinction you've tried to make between "Explore" and "Navigate" is very vague, and basically amounts to "Explore is Mario-related stuff, Navigate is all the links where I couldn't find anywhere else to put them" (seriously, how does the wiki's anniversary page help you navigate? Or the "random article" option, that sure sounds like exploration if I've ever heard it.)
The navigation and social links aren't placed front and center for a reason: they're not of the most importance to someone joining just to look at Mario. The Mario Wiki's primary purpose is to be read, not to be edited; to place equal emphasis on the latter is strange to me.
Outside of a few oddities (namely the placement of References and Glossary), I think the current arrangement is fine. If anything were to be changed, it would definitely be the heading color (vibrant colors don't go the best with white text, especially when it comprises every header). The only problem I have with the color choices in the sandbox is that they're a little too unsaturated (what is this, the Watercolor Wiki?). - Hewer (talk) Second choice, per all.
Only relocate the social links
Do nothing
- Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) - I see literally no reason why the current one is in need of changing, nor how this is any better by any objective metric.
- Hewer (talk) While there are a few small oddities with the current main page (like the placement of the references link), this whole redesign feels very unnecessary and would probably do more harm than good.
- Arend (talk) There isn't anything wrong with the current main page (e.g. the colors are just fine as they are, and so are the blocks of the topics (Featured Article, News, The 'Shroom, Polls, etc)). I don't understand how turning those blocks into two columns improves the main page (especially since the two columns will be viewed under each other as separate objects on mobile screens anyway), you don't need to fix what ain't broke. I also don't really like that the proposed Main Page has a big block of empty space under the right column (or left column on 4:3/iPad screens), which was somehow even worse in a previous revision, when the current main page doesn't have that problem on either PC or tablet, especially since four extra things ("Help us maintain this page", "View recent changes to the wiki", "Check out a random article", "Answers to frequently asked questions") will show up depending on the width of the screen or window, which the proposed Main Page does not do. I feel like it's a mistake to swap the placements of The 'Shroom and Mushroom World Encyclopedia, since this seems to be the cause of that block of empty space (our current Main Page only seems to swap these, again, depending on the width of the screen/window). I do like the inclusion of Mario and Luigi on the proposed Main Page's welcome banner though. (I should mention that I've been using the Monobook wiki skin, but I've also looked at the proposed main page when using the Vector skin and my problems with the empty spaces still remain there)
- Tails777 (talk) I kinda prefer how the main page looks as it is. This could wholeheartedly just be that side of me that isn't huge on change (I've been here for a long time, it's the same reason I haven't considered changing my username), but I've never once had any issue with any aspect of the main page, whether is be visuals, format or navigation.
#Koopa con Carne (talk) i’ll mainly oppose due to the newly added Explore and Navigate blocks, which add too much empty space and ruin the neat and compact appearance of the navigation portal. I don’t know if splicing the tabs on each half of the page into a column is a net bad or good, though I’m leaning towards calling it unecessary. I do like having social links gathered in their own place and I’ve come to realize that the more desaturated colors are better on the eyes, especially since the redesign keeps the positioning of the hues as the current page.
Comments
Abstaining from a vote for now, but pretty much the only thing we like about the proposed redesign is the fact that the two halved bars (Featured Article/Community Poll/The 'Shroom & News/DYK/Mushroom World Encyclopedia) are merged together. It helps them flow better. Pretty much everything else (especially the revised header that's been split up into these weird chunks, making it actually less united than the changed sidebars), we don't really see why we should bother changing. ~Camwoodstock (talk) 21:21, May 17, 2024 (EDT)
- Well as I've said in the proposal, it's not necessarily the finalized design. That will be on the community to decide later on, if this proposal passes. Super Mario RPG (talk) 21:23, May 17, 2024 (EDT)
On my screen (desktop mode on mobile, not sure if that makes a difference), the proposed redesign has some awkward empty space under The Shroom (filled in the current design by the links to "Help us maintain this page", "View recent changes to the wiki", etc.), and the "Navigate" box is cut off by the right side of the screen. @Koopa con Carne: So taking the oppose into account, would this proposal not passing mean that the desaturated colors and placement of social links won't occur? Or would a later consensus be to retain the main page design but change those two factors? Super Mario RPG (talk) 07:03, May 18, 2024 (EDT)
- The proposal is worded as though it doesn't have a concrete goal: it's essentially a proposal to make a proposal about something, which just seems to add a pointless step in the process and is not something I could see myself endorsing either way. I see you've added two new options based on feedback, which is good, but before I cast my final vote I'd like to know if the changes would be enacted right away or if it's an attempt to just get a nod of agreement from users for something you're vaguely planning to do in the future. Would also be nice to see how you envision the main page with social links relocated but without the Explore and Navigate tabs. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 08:41, May 18, 2024 (EDT)
- Making proposals is a complicated process, so I can see why there's confusion. I've updated my proposal for better clarity. Super Mario RPG (talk) 08:57, May 18, 2024 (EDT)
@MegaBowser64 The few critiques to the proposed design are understandable, which is why if the "Support a full redesign" option passes, it will likely be followed by another proposal, to address some of the potential issues that my proposed design has from others who otherwise want an overhaul of the main page. Super Mario RPG (talk) 11:09, May 18, 2024 (EDT)
- I see. In that case, I would definitely be in support of this proposal. MegaBowser64 (talk) 13:06, May 19, 2024 (EDT)
We're gonna be honest here--we don't like that new header at all. The fact that it doesn't actually share the same widths as the two halves beneath it, and the fact there's also no united border around it, makes it feel like just a mesh of rounded boxes. We'd be fine if it was just the stuff below it, but the header absolutely ruins it for us. ~Camwoodstock (talk) 11:18, May 18, 2024 (EDT)
- @Camwoodstock Yeah, that one was a tough for the proposed design, since I was concerned about the resulting empty space if I made the heading. Does it look better now? I've now made them a consistent width (60% left, 40% right) though I don't currently have an idea on how to sort the "Explore" under the top-left heading, if that's even feasible. Super Mario RPG (talk) 11:38, May 18, 2024 (EDT)
- We appreciate the fact they're no longer all jumbled up and have a consistent wid, though it still irks us that they don't have some united border whatsoever; especially since the main thing we enjoy about the tweaks beneath the header is that the two halves do have a united border now when they previously didn't. If we have to retain the current header to some capacity instead of simply transplanting the current header into this, at least taking a page from the current header where the top left box is borderless, combine the bottom two boxes under the same border, and then encase that entire thing in one big border might work? (This might be a little hard to explain in text, if you really want, we could make a quick-and-dirty mockup of what we mean in paint.net. ;P) ~Camwoodstock (talk) 11:54, May 18, 2024 (EDT)
- You're welcome to show that to me, sure. Feel free to make the change on my sandbox page if you'd like. Super Mario RPG (talk) 11:57, May 18, 2024 (EDT)

@Arend Just wanted to mention that I did integrate FAQ and Random article under the "Navigation" heading, and the "Maintain this page" is still retained outright. Recent changes could possibly be integrated into the "Navigate," though I wondered the feasibility of that decision, considering a link to it is already on the sidebar. The display issues can be fixed, though it may be difficult for me to, since I'm not an expert in device optimization (i.e. if the proposed design passes, the proprietor will maintain it like how the current main page is being maintained). I didn't use some of the existing main page classes since some of those have predefined colors, hence a possibility of why there's display issues on the proposed design.
