amiibo is a brand of "Toys to Life" products[1] consisting of near field communication-based figurines that can have data read and written on them, used as add-ons to games with amiibo compatibility. Originally referred to internally under the working title "Nintendo Figure Platform" ("NFP") in development[1], the first line of amiibo, based upon Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, launched on the same day as Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the first amiibo-compatible game, and there are amiibo lines based upon various games and franchises[2], such as the Super Mario and Yoshi's Woolly World lines.

Features

With Wii U software, amiibo can be used by placing a figure on the   near-field communicator built into the Wii U GamePad under the D-pad; the console must also be updated to at least version 5.3.0. A peripheral for the Nintendo 3DS has also been released in the fall of 2015 that wirelessly connects to the 3DS to send and receive data[3]; the New Nintendo 3DS, however, features a built in near-field communicator on the bottom touch-screen. They can also be used on the Nintendo Switch by holding them to the joystick on a Joy-Con (R) or the logo on a Pro Controller. The figures come with data already on them, but data can also be written on them by the hardware. Several figures will be compatible with multiple games; for example, the Super Smash Bros. line Mario figure can also be used in Mario Party 10.[4] Multiple games can read an amiibo's data, while only one game's data can be written to the figure at a time.[5]

In addition to figurines, a card format is also available.[6] Additionally, an app released for the Wii U, amiibo tap: Nintendo's Greatest Bits, allows players to unlock demos of certain NES and SNES titles by scanning amiibo.[7]

Mario-related games compatible with amiibo

Game Description Read/Write or Read
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker In the Wii U version, upon scanning the Toad amiibo, "Pixel Toad" appears, hidden in each stage for the player to find. Every other amiibo increases the player's amount of 1-ups.
These games only read the data on the amiibo.
In the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS versions, instead of using the Toad amiibo for Hide and Seek, it can be used for playing a level while invincible, similar to the effects of the Mario amiibo in Super Mario Odyssey. Additionally, scanning either the Wedding Mario, Wedding Peach, or Wedding Bowser amiibo will unlock the Super Mario Odyssey-themed levels early.

Luigi's Mansion Scanning the Boo amiibo will reveal Boo locations in the mansion's rooms on the Nintendo 3DS Touch Screen. Scanning the Toad amiibo while talking to Toad in-game will completely replenish Luigi's health. Scanning the Luigi amiibo will replenish Luigi's health completely after losing his health from battling ghosts. Scanning the Mario amiibo replaces Poison Mushrooms with Super Mushrooms, restoring 25 HP upon collecting.
This game only reads the data on the amiibo.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey Shows the corresponding amiibo compatible on the top screen. Scanning one of them gives the player items for Bowser's Inside Story or Bowser Jr.'s Journey. The chest can either be bronze, silver, or gold. The same amiibo can only be scanned once per day.
This game only reads the data on the amiibo.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Compatible amiibo (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Toad, and Bowser) give the player special support cards to use in battle. Users can tap two of the same character amiibo to receive a Double Support Card.
This game both reads and writes data on the amiibo.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions Compatible amiibo (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Toad Bowser, Bowser Jr., Goomba, Koopa Troopa, and Boo) give the player special stamps. Goomba, Koopa Troopa, and Boo respectively unlock gold versions of Captain Goomba, Captain Koopa Troopa, and Captain Boo.
These games both read and write data on certain amiibo, while they only read data on other amiibo.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games In the 3DS version, scanning any Mario amiibo will unlock a Gold Mario costume, while scanning a Sonic amiibo will unlock a Super Sonic costume, both of which can be used on the player's Mii. In the Wii U version, scanning either one of the above amiibo will let players play the Mario League and Sonic League modes respectively, where the player can win the Gold Mario and Super Sonic costumes in each one.[8]
These games only read the data on the amiibo.
Mario Kart 8 Compatible amiibo will unlock 19 alternate costumes for Miis, giving them a racing suit based upon the character scanned.

The same costumes return in the Nintendo Switch port, along with a 20th costume based on the Splatoon series. Additionally, Isabelle and other Animal Crossing amiibo can also be used to unlock the Animal Crossing costume. The Pikmin amiibo can also be used to unlock the Pikmin Suit as of version 1.2.0.

These games both only read the data on the amiibo.
  Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Mario Party 10 Scanning certain amiibo allow the player to access amiibo Party mode, in which the amiibo characters are used as game pieces to travel across the board; the player can also unlock special boards based upon the scanned amiibo to play on in amiibo Party. amiibo with data from the game can also save Tokens obtained in the mode. Touching any amiibo figure to the Wii U GamePad controller gives the player a Scratch Bonus, used to win Mario Party Points, and special figure bases for amiibo with Mario Party 10 data.
This game both reads and writes data on certain amiibo, while it only reads data on other amiibo.
Mario Party: Star Rush Compatible with the Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, Yoshi, Toad, Bowser, Bowser Jr. Wario, Waluigi, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and Boo amiibo, the functionality differs with each game mode. For example: Bowser and Bowser Jr. can only be used in Mario Shuffle and the Character Museum.

When an amiibo is used in Toad Scramble, players can control that character from the start, with that character also starting with a Double Dice Block. In Coinathlon, players can use that character scanned additionally with two extra items. In Balloon Bash and Mario Shuffle, players receive a Special Dice Block at the start of the game. If Mario Party 10 data is on the amiibo figure, a Gold, Silver, or Bronze Dice Block is rewarded depending on if the amiibo has special Tokens saved to it. Gold Mario and Silver Mario also start with a Gold and Silver Dice Block respectively, regardless of save data.

If a Dr. Mario amiibo is used in Rhythm Recital, a new music track can be used. In Challenge Tower, if a player gets a Game Over, an amiibo figure can be used to continue right from that spot; however, each figure can used only once per day. In Boo's Block Party, if the Boo amiibo is scanned, Boo appears in the background. In Character Museum, the player can collect stamps with amiibo.

Non Mario amiibo can be used in the main hub; they simply cause a variety of effects to occur, such as many balloons floating up.

This game only reads the data on the amiibo.
Mario Party: The Top 100 Compatible with the Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, Yoshi, Toad, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Wario, Waluigi, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Goomba, Koopa Troopa, and Boo amiibo.

When used, amiibo will give the player bonus coins in the Minigame Island mode. If a Goomba or Koopa Troopa amiibo is used when the player passes by the respective character in Minigame Island, the player gains 50 coins instead of 10. Players will also unlock the Goomba and Koopa Troopa minigame packs if the respective amiibo are scanned in the minigame pack menu.

This game only reads the data on the amiibo.
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle The Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi amiibo are compatible. Upon completing World 1-5, Brother, Where Art Thou?, these amiibo can be scanned to unlock weapons for the game's playable characters.
This game only reads the data on the amiibo.
Mario Sports Superstars The game comes with its own set of amiibo cards, featuring one character for each of the five sports. Players can unlock star versions of characters by tapping the card in. Tapping three cards in unlocks the Road to Superstar mode, where, if completed, bestows a Superstar status to the characters who completed the mode. In tennis, tapping in an amiibo card gives the player a partner of the character on the card. amiibo can additionally be used up to three times per day to buy a 3 pack digital card package off the shop. The Super Mario series amiibo figures are recognized as generic amiibo, which unlock cards in the collection three times a day.
This game both reads and writes data on certain amiibo, while it only reads data on other amiibo.
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash When a compatible amiibo is scanned into the game, that character appears in the game as a computer partner that can be trained, similarly to Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. The Gold Mario amiibo exclusively summons a golden Mario partner (other Mario amiibo summon 'normal' Mario instead).
This game both reads and writes data on the amiibo.
Mini Mario & Friends: amiibo Challenge Scanning certain Mario related amiibo creates a toy character of the scanned character to navigate a level; different character toys have different abilities. Scanning any other amiibo (except for cards) creates a Mini Spek to navigate a level.
This game only reads the data on the amiibo.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Scanning the Cat Mario amiibo produces an Invincibility Bell that turns Mario into White Cat Mario, while scanning the Cat Peach amiibo produces a Super Bell, Fire Flower, Boomerang Flower, Super Leaf, Super Mushroom, Lucky Bell, Super Star, Invincibility Leaf, or Invincibility Bell. Scanning any amiibo of characters from the Super Mario franchise will produce a Super Star, while scanning any amiibo of characters from other franchises will produce a 1-Up Mushroom in the Super Mario 3D World mode and a Super Mushroom in the Bowser's Fury mode. In addition, exclusively to Bowser's Fury, scanning any Bowser amiibo makes Fury Bowser appear at the player's command, while scanning the Bowser Jr. amiibo creates a shockwave that knocks out nearby enemies and blocks.[9][10] However, during the introduction before leaving Fur Step Island, amiibos are unable to be scanned at any point before teaming up with Bowser Jr.
This game only reads the data on the amiibo.
Super Mario Maker Certain amiibo characters can be scanned, inserting them into the game, though only in the Super Mario Bros. graphical style. While playing a level, scanned characters appear as Mystery Mushrooms, which, when obtained by Mario, cause him to resemble said characters as Costume Mario. Accompanying sound effects also result, and all costumes can do a pose by pressing  . By scanning either 30th Anniversary 8-bit Mario amiibo, a Big Mushroom appears in the game, which will turn Mario into Big Mario.[11] Big Mario's color scheme depends on which amiibo is scanned.
This game only reads the data on the amiibo.
Super Mario Odyssey Scanning any amiibo through Uncle amiibo will reveal a Power Moon location. Scanning the Mario, Dr. Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Diddy Kong, Gold Mario, Silver Mario, Wedding Mario, Wedding Peach, and Wedding Bowser amiibo will also unlock these characters' outfits for Mario to wear, in addition to revealing a Power Moon location. Uncle amiibo also recognizes a wide variety of Nintendo character amiibo, such as Daisy, Rosalina, Yoshi, Link, Samus, and Toad by their official names. Several amiibo were released to promote this game, namely the Wedding Mario, Wedding Peach, and Wedding Bowser amiibo which were released on October 27, 2017, as well as the Super Mario Cereal (with a section of its box functioning as an amiibo) which was released on December 11, 2017.

Version 1.2.0 also added Goomba and Koopa Troopa to the amiibo database, among other recent Nintendo amiibo released near the launch of the game.

While holding Right, scanning any Mario amiibo makes Mario temporarily invincible (as if he were under the effect of a Super Star), any Peach amiibo supplies a Life-Up Heart, and any Bowser amiibo (except Skylander Bowser) shows regional coin locations. Every other amiibo give the player up to three coins or a Heart per scan, which can be done an unlimited number of times.[12]

This game only reads the data on the amiibo.
Super Mario Party Compatible with the Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, Yoshi, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Wario, Waluigi, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Goomba, Koopa Troopa, and Boo amiibo. These amiibo can be scanned to receive stickers.

Scanning generic amiibo will grant Party Points.

This game only reads the data on the amiibo.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS Once an amiibo is scanned in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, the player can play with them in a team battle or against them. They are referred as Figure Players (shortened as FP) in-game. They are actually being controlled by CPUs and players can train them, until they reach level 50. The player can customize their power, defense, and speed values at their own will with the obtained custom parts. By playing with FPs, they may grow by level (which caps at 50) and change their strategy depending what their opponents usually do. During fights, they may obtain gifts, such as Trophies, Equipment, and Gold, which are given to the player.
These games both read and write data on the amiibo.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate The amiibo functionality is largely the same as Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. amiibo data from the previous games can be transferred to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Similar to customization in the previous game, the player can use spirits to level up and increase the Figure Player's attack and defense powers, as well as inherit skills and alter the FPs personality. Non-fighter amiibo can also unlock their respective spirits.

In addition to the Super Smash Bros. series amiibo, fighters' amiibo from other series are compatible as well. Existing amiibo of fighters new to this game, such as Daisy from the Super Mario series, Chrom from the Fire Emblem series, either Isabelle figurine amiibo from the Animal Crossing series, and any Inkling Boy, Girl, or Squid amiibo from the Splatoon series are compatible. [13] New Super Smash Bros. series amiibo of the new fighters to the Super Smash Bros. series, as well as several returning fighters not present in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, have also been confirmed for release.[14][15]

WarioWare Gold In amiibo Sketch, scanning an amiibo lets Wario draw a sketch based of that character with a random background, which can then be sold for coins. Scanning a generic amiibo lets Wario draw a generic pattern sketch instead. Wario can only draw three sketches per day.
This game only reads the data on the amiibo.
Yoshi's Crafted World Scanning an amiibo unlocks a costume for Yoshis to wear. Generic amiibo unlock an amiibo box costume.
This game only reads the data on the amiibo.
Yoshi's Woolly World Once a Yoshi amiibo is scanned in Yoshi's Woolly World, another Yoshi appears, which mimics the moves of the player. The player can also make a Yarn ball out of the Yoshi, and throw it like in multiplayer mode. Players can save one Yoshi design onto the Yarn Yoshi amiibo. Scanning any other amiibo unlocks a Yoshi design based on the character.[16] Scanning a generic amiibo unlocks "amiibo Yoshi", a Green Yoshi with an amiibo t-shirt.

The amiibo in Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World have the same functionality as the Wii U original. Scanning a Yarn Poochy amiibo summons Poochy in a level, and also unlocks new challenges in Poochy Dash that award Poochy designs. All amiibo-based Yoshi designs from the Wii U game return, with several amiibo-based Yoshi designs being added into the game, including new patterns based on Wario (Super Mario series), Daisy, Waluigi, and Boo.[17]

These games both read and write data on certain amiibo, while they only read data on other amiibo.
  Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World

  • Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash: If the player has also linked a Chibi-Robo amiibo to the game, figures of Chibi-Robo imitating the scanned amiibo's pose will be added for collection in the Toy Capsule Machine (compatible with Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Bowser, Dr. Mario, Bowser Jr., Toad, Rosalina, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and Wario).
  • Conga Master Party!: Unlocks a costume for one of the 12 characters (compatible with all amiibo from the Super Mario line).

  • Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia: All non-Fire Emblem amiibo summon one or more generic illusory units that will assist the player's army for one turn. • Hey! Pikmin: The amiibo based on the figure scanned appears in-game for Olimar to collect in a Secret Spot, and Olimar will record his thoughts on the figure on his log. Generic amiibo (such as Boo) doesn't give a specific ability, instead providing a random ability. All modes also provide a healing item to Kirby, or in some cases, Meta Knight.

Yoshi's Woolly World

Unlike other amiibo, the Yoshi's Woolly World amiibo are made of yarn rather than plastic, with an NFC chip and scan point in the underside rather than having a base with the chip in it. The Mega Yarn Yoshi, however, has the NFC chip underneath its left foot instead of its underside.

Skylanders: SuperChargers

While they are primarily meant to be Skylanders figures, the bases of these figures act as a switch that, when twisted, switches between the Skylander mode, and an amiibo mode which allows the figures to be used in amiibo-compatible games compatible with other versions of the figure. These figures are included with the Skylanders: SuperChargers starter packs for Nintendo consoles; Turbo Charge Donkey Kong comes with the Wii U version, while Hammer Slam Bowser comes with the Wii and Nintendo 3DS versions; each figure also comes with a personal vehicle.[30] The standard versions were later released separately alongside their vehicles.

The figures are later compatible with the Wii U and Switch versions of Skylanders: Imaginators.

Card list
Main article: List of Mario Sports Superstars amiibo cards

There are a total of 90 amiibo cards in this series. Each of the eighteen playable characters receive one card for each of the five sports. Unlike the Animal Crossing series cards, these are considered as separate characters and only supported specifically for Mario Sports Superstars, thus do not work or recognized as a generic amiibo in all other games.

Controversy

The availability of certain amiibo has been subject to criticism. For example, the Target-exclusive shipments of the Rosalina & Luma amiibo were stated to be ceased permanently, limiting the availability of the amiibo in the U.S. until a restock at Target.com came mid-July 2015.[31] Immediately following the preorder release of the Wave 4 amiibo, GameStop servers experienced a major overload and shut down temporarily for nearly an hour. The incident was met with intense criticism and frustration by fans who wished to purchase the amiibo.[32] John Vignocchi, the executive producer of Disney Infinity, another game that uses NFC figures, stated "[An intentional shortage] is irresponsible and rude to your hardcore fans," referring to the amiibo shortages.[33] Satoru Iwata noticed the issue and apologized for it; he promised that more will be manufactured to meet the demand in the future.[34] The amiibo cards were released with the intention to address the amiibo figurine shortages.[35]

Trivia

The Bowser Jr. amiibo in Mario Party: Star Rush
  • The word "new" in the New Nintendo 3DS logo is stylized similarly to the amiibo logo.
  • In Mario Party: Star Rush, Bowser Jr. has a model of a Super Mario series amiibo in Mario Shuffle mode when being played (based on his artwork for Mario Party 9), though no physical version of it has released yet.
