If you have been directed here by the Sitenotice:

We cannot have an odd number of players. We had 6, but technical difficulties have caused Knife to not be available. We must find a replacement within 2 days!! We plan to have the tournament on Sunday, New Year's Eve, at 8pm EDT, so we can finish just before the New Year. Perhaps unnoticed by you, we do have a simple chat room at the forum, and that is where we will meet and coordinate who goes when. It requires you to have Java installed – if you don't have that, you'll need to be able to IM the director, Wayoshi, at either AIM (preferred) or MSN – but please let him know in advance

If you think you can make it (expect up to a 2-3 hour committment), please sign up in the table below and additionally look at some of the discussion, including what courses we are playing in each round and brackets. The first player will be in Bracket C – if we can get 3 more players, we can make a Bracket D and have one more match set up.

Thanks for reading, and if you're already in, be there and good luck!

If we can only muster 5 players...Wayoshi has a backup plan, but it wouldn't be the best tournament (same with 7). If we get 4 or below, that's disappointing, but at least we can do something.

I have the game, but how do you get on wi-fi? Do you have to buy a special cord or something?--Aipom_Banana_2.gif Aipom 424.png--

If you don't have a wireless connection, you'll need a Nintendo USB Connector, another $29.99-$39.99 ($34.99 on Nintendo.com). Wa Yoshihead.png TC@Y 19:00, 17 December 2006 (EST)

Sorry, but no. They've been sold out in all toy stores everywhere near me.--Aipom_Banana_2.gif Aipom 424.png--

Suggested:

With the six people we have right now, we can do the following:

A) Have two matches of three people. 3rd place after the match is eliminated. The remaining four have a match, the top two move on. Match between them for the title. Total Matches: 4

B) My idea →

  1. Create pairs of people in Bracket A, Bracket B, and Bracket C. These won't be partners.
  2. Bracket A plays Bracket B, then B plays C, and A plays C. Each player gets to play two matches: one time against all other competitors and both times against the other player in their bracket.
  3. From the combined total of points earned (max 80, 1st in each race = 10*8), determine the top 4 players, or the top 2 brackets based on combined points (max 136: 1st & 2nd in each race = 17*8)
  4. Have a final four match, the top two advance; they race for the title.

Total Matches: 5 ;)

Another key component is tie-breaker privileges. My plan is the higher the points, the better. For example:

  • The player who was 1st overall in the Bracket round ties in 2nd in the final four match. He moves on because he had more points in the previous round – he wins the tie-breaker.
  • The player who is 1st in the final four match wins if it is a 30-30 (two races won each, 10+10+5+5) tie in the championship match, meaning that 2nd place must win three races out of four to capture the title.

These tie-breakers are set so we don't have to play another (boring) two-player match to try to break a tie, which could result in another tie.

Any objections? B) allows for one more match. If we can get 8 definite players, we can a) have two four-player matches, top two move on to final four or b) create Brackets A-D and have 3 matches for each player in the first round (max pts solo-player 120, bracket-combined 204). I personally don't want any "teaming up" to move on, but if that's preferred, we can opt that way as well. Partners/bracket set-ups would be randomly determined.

Thats Great! WarioLoaf (talk)

Guys, should I choose the tracks for each match (also randomly)? I don't want any double-tracks in the same match. Wa Yoshihead.png TC@Y 16:10, 18 December 2006 (EST)

Official Brackets

Determined randomly. I know, Knife, you are kinda questionable, so Aipom, you would take his place. If we get 8 people, spots 7 & 8 make Bracket D.

Bracket A

  • Steve
  • Parayoshi

Bracket B

  • WarioLoaf
  • Wayoshi

Bracket C

  • 3dejong
  • Knife

Remember that the other person in your bracket you face twice in the first round, the other players once each. This could or could not work to your advantage! Wa Yoshihead.png TC@Y 16:06, 18 December 2006 (EST)

This looks fun! Thank you, Wayoshi, for setting this up. I did steal your idea, though... ;) 3dhammer.gif 3D, {{{1}}} 3dhammer.gif

Possible Track Set-Up

Determined randomly.

# Bracket A vs. B Bracket B vs. C Bracket A vs. C Final Four Championship
1 Luigi Circuit Sky Garden Peach Circuit Baby Park Choco Island 2
2 Cheep Cheep Beach DK Pass Luigi's Mansion Rainbow Road Desert Hills
3 Mario Circuit Figure-8 Circuit Frappe Snowland Moo Moo Farm Yoshi Falls
4 Wario Stadium Yoshi Circuit Choco Mountain Delfino Square Mario Circuit 1

If we decide to have set courses, right now w/ 6 players leaves each course played once in the tournament. Or, we can randomly select courses as it comes, making sure not to play the same course twice in one match. Please leave opinions. Wa Yoshihead.png TC@Y 16:41, 18 December 2006 (EST)

Date?

We should officially settle on a date for the tournament. It can stretch over two days if necessary.

  • Sunday, December 31st
  • Monday, January 1st
  • Tuesday, January 2nd

We also need to set a time (especially for Sunday, to fit New Year parties if anyone has one).

I suggest New Year's Eve at 8 PM EDT, to kick off the new year in style. This will only work if no one has anywhere to go, though (come here – please!!!). Wa Yoshihead.png TC@Y 21:20, 18 December 2006 (EST)

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Sounds fun! Kick off 2006! Or, maybe we could start at 9-10, to play to 12:00! 3dhammer.gif 3D, {{{1}}} 3dhammer.gif

For the time being, the tournament is scheduled for NEW YEAR'S EVE, SUNDAY, DECEMBER 31ST, 2006 AT 8:00PM EST (7:00 CST, 5:00 PST). Wa Yoshihead.png TC@Y 16:06, 22 December 2006 (EST)

Rules

Here are two important rules to keep in mind.

  1. If you disconnect, you are disqualified. Sorry, but we can't tell whether it's by accident or on purpose – stay close to your wireless router or USB adapter for safety.
  2. You must use the same character/kart combo for all matches. Result of changing: disqualification.

Thanks! Wa Yoshihead.png TC@Y 21:55, 19 December 2006 (EST)
