• The official guide from Prima refers to him as such. Nintendo's been letting them do the official guides for a while now, so I think it's the closest we've got to an actual source.

I have a theory: Mario and co. didn't wear the bell, so they didn't get rare side effects. I saw how Bowser acted greatly like a cat, so I think when he put the bell in his neck, the bell got control of Bowser completely, and turned him into Meowser. Then Bowser lost his control and acted like an evil cat. If Mario and co. put the bell in the neck, something similar would happen.--2.138.14.230 10:30, 4 December 2013 (EST)
