Template:Levelbox World 1-1 is the first course in Super Mario Bros. 3. The course takes place in the game's first world, Grass Land, and is designed to introduce players to new features such as jumping Paragoombas, Fire Piranha Plants (known in this game as "Venus Fire Traps"), and most importantly the infamous Super Leaf power-up that transforms Mario (or Luigi) into a flying raccoon.

Overview

This traditional 1-1 setting is largely plain-based and features common enemies like Goombas and Koopa Troopas. Continuing forward from the start reveals the first new enemy, a Venus Fire Trap (though it is a normal Piranha Plant in the Game Boy Advance remake) lurking inside a pipe. Another feature new to Super Mario Bros. 3 is the ability to pick up Koopa Troopa shells and kick them at ? Blocks; on the next screen, if Mario has grabbed a Super Mushroom from the ? Blocks earlier, he can open the block ahead using the red Koopa Troopa to reveal the first new power-up, the Super Leaf. World 1-1's primary purpose is to allow players to teach themselves how to use Raccoon Mario's tail to attack enemies and even to fly through the air.

After this is a stretch of flat land, with two Goombas and a hopping red Para-Goomba. If these enemies are defeated, this flat stretch of land provides the perfect runway to get a running start and practice tapping the A button to fly in the air with their raccoon tail. By mastering his new abilities, Mario can reach a bonus area in the sky and even find a 1-Up Mushroom inside a Brick Block.

A stack of Brick Blocks found later on can be attacked by kicking the nearby red Koopa Troopa to the left. This will almost always free up space underneath the top-right Brick Block, and activating it will create a P Switch (or a "Switch Block", as this game calls it) which transforms the Brick Blocks into a handful of coins.

At this point in the course, Mario is free to reach the flashing goal just to the right; however, if he's managed to hold on to his Super Leaf, he can fly to the top of the tallest pipe and press down on top of it to enter a secret room. This secret has just a small stash of 11 coins, arranged in the shape of the number "3" to celebrate the third game in the mainline Super Mario Bros. series. The exit pipe spits Mario out right back at the goal to complete this area.
