The marker is the playable element in the Qix games. The player controls it to conquer as much area as it can without crashing itself or with its line against obstacles like the Sparx and the Qixs.

In the first storyline of the Super Mario Land 4 manga, Mario and his friends are challenged by Qix Daiō into facing three minions in a real-life game of Qix. His last challenge takes place on the rooftop pool of Qix Biru, where they will be using Marker motorboats to delimit the conquered area. During the match, a dangerous Qix floats above them, but having Hiyoihoi on board, Qix Daiō keeps the Qix away from its Marker, while Mario's Marker gets sliced two times. After the first cut, Mario's Marker almost crashes down the building, but gets stuck into the railing and Qix Daiō attempts to shove his rivals down the building. Princess Daisy tickles him, stopping him from hurting her friends and incidentally, due to his spasms, Qix Daiō damages his Marker with his spiky helmet, breaking the motorboat. Furious, Qix Daiō sics the Qix against Mario's Marker, slicing it a second time, forcing Mario to end the match by swimming.
