The Super Mario Wiki does not use subpages in the main or gallery namespaces. This is because:

  • Article titles should read naturally and follow standard English conventions.
    • A slash is assumed to separate alternatives (e.g. ON/OFF Switch), not act like a computer file path.
  • Articles should be titled to exist on their own merit and not just as an extension of an existing page.

Instead of subpages, lists are often used. New list pages under 1,000 bytes in size must have a corresponding proposal or consensus-reaching discussion in order to be split from a subject's main article. If all the content can be included in the main article without creating an excessively long section, then a separate list page is unnecessary. Merging any existing list back into its main article also requires a discussion/proposal, regardless of its size. For a directory of lists, see Category:Lists.

Naming conventions

The format List of {game name} {topic} is used for real-world topics and meta video game terms/concepts (e.g. staff, minigames). The format List of {topic} in {game name} is used for topics which refer to the subject from an in-game or in-universe perspective, such as specific items or enemies found within the game world (e.g. letters, Boos).

For lists related to a series, the format becomes List of {topic} from/in the {series name} series (e.g. List of quotes from the Mario Kart series). The word from is use for real-world and video game topics, and in is used for in-game and in-universe topics.

Extended example

Let's say we wanted to create a list of characters for a particular game. The term characters approaches the subject as a video game and a work of fiction, so the format List of {game name} characters is used. If for whatever reason we were describing the characters from an in-game perspective, a term like people would be used instead, and the format would be List of people in {game name}. Hence the title List of drivers in Mario Kart Tour, since the term drivers is more of an in-universe term in the world of Mario Kart than a term which inherently approaches the subject as a video game or work of fiction.

Introductions

The six main types of lists, in addition to gallery pages, all have a specific format that should be used for their introduction. Different types of pages have slightly different wording, which allows for some variation while also maintaining consistency across all the common lists and galleries. In addition, certain parts of the introductions change to match the subject matter; for example, a page about the quotes from a game would read "This is a list of quotes from the game..." while a quotes page for a film would read "This is a list of quotes from the film...".

Allowances are also made for when a game has been remade or ported, as the reissue game's ex-subpage should be linked to on the ex-subpage of the original game (or the section of the other game's article, if not enough content exists for a separate page) and vice-versa. For example, on the Super Mario Bros. 3 pre-release and unused content page, the introduction reads:

This is a list of pre-release and unused content for the game Super Mario Bros. 3. For pre-release and unused content pertaining to the remake, Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, see List of Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 pre-release and unused content.

And on the Super Mario Advance 4 pre-release and unused content page, the introduction reads:

This is a list of pre-release and unused content for the game Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3. For pre-release and unused content pertaining to the original Super Mario Bros. 3, see List of Super Mario Bros. 3 pre-release and unused content.

If it is not clear from the name that a game is a reissue of another game, such as Super Mario Advance, the intro can specify that is it a remake or port:

This is a gallery of images for the game Super Mario Advance, a remake of Super Mario Bros. 2. For images pertaining to the original game, see Gallery:Super Mario Bros. 2.

Similarly, galleries and any lists that pertain to special subjects or otherwise have unique circumstances (i.e. Gallery:The Year of Luigi or List of Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels glitches) can have extra information or completely unique introductions to suit the specific situation, however these exceptions are few and far between. In almost all cases, the galleries and lists can be given an introduction following the outline below. Please note that the remake/port lines are included by default, but if a game does not have a reissue, obviously these lines will be omitted; other common situation-specific options are included in brackets (i.e. use "the" when talking about an item, but not a character).
