Thank You[edit]

Thanks for separating Gold Mario from the other drivers. Johnjohn2001 (talk) 00:31, August 22, 2021 (PDT)

He's separate because it's organised by rarity. Marie costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 06:03, August 22, 2021 (EDT)

Unmanagable "Availability"[edit]

This topic is a real pain. Given that MKT is a gacha game with everchanging availabilities it's becoming quite unmanagable to keep track of the (as of now) 125+ characters plus karts and gliders and it's only going to get worse. It already happened with the "favorite tracks" aspect of the game, since that changes every two weeks someone has to check that page and change it every tour, sometimes it goes weeks without changes because of the amount of work it requires. Right now there are 2 versions of "availability" for some characters which Koopa con Carne has been working on (See https://www.mariowiki.com/Category:Mario_Kart_Tour_Availabilities) and although this version seems more accurate the lists are different plus it's clear that it's going to generate further clustering in this and the kart / glider page. I'm trying to revamp the Driver list and the only thing I can think of to be both estetically pleasing and as complete as possible is in my Sandbox. The main problem here is how to define "special availability" since the line is getting blured as more and more oportunities are being given to get past drivers. We really need to think on an overhaul to this, maybe with a proposition vote?

My proposition? Eliminate the Special Availabilities and only keep track for when the driver/kart/glider was first added if it was added as a tour exclusive or regular or if it became a regular in a future tour. My reasoning here is that as time passess and people jump in during the current tour is not that useful to have that many notes on things that already expired.

Yeah, over time these availability listings will only bloat the driver tables more. Personally, I'd rather we relocate the special availabilities to dedicated pages; I don't think we ought to prune them entirely since it's the wiki's job to offer a thorough historic record of how each driver, kart, or glider has been obtainable. I'd suggest setting up a formal proposal before any decision is made. I'll put on hold any further creation of these availability pages until such a proposal is settled. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 21:28, August 27, 2021 (EDT)
Those special availability sections are actually very useful, they allow to know when and how a driver was specifically available. For example, it allows to know that Black Yoshi and Dry Bones (Gold) were first introduced in packs and weren't available through other means (and that Black Yoshi was specifically available in just one pipe as non-spotlight driver). Many buffs to drivers also correspond to special availability, with Dry Bones (Gold) and the Head Honcho in the Kamek Tour being again an example of that. I agree on making a separate page for such information if needed, though.--Mister Wu (talk) 06:38, August 29, 2021 (EDT)
I like the recent reorganisation, with the availability currently on the same page but separate.

Glad you liked it! Took me some time to think it out and edit everything. MariusM (talk) 16:05, September 8, 2021 (EDT)

I found that it's actually quite useful: for example, I haven't unlocked Ice Mario yet, and it says that he has been available recently (Frost tour $40 pack), so I can assume that I will have to wait a while for him to be available again. BananaBarrelsMK (talk) 18:00, September 8, 2021 (EDT)

Previous Drivers[edit]

So in the article it says "Currently, there are only four Mario characters from previous Mario Kart games that are not playable in this game, those being Paratroopa and Petey Piranha from Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Wiggler and Honey Queen from Mario Kart 7." Link, R.O.B., Villager, Pac Man, Inkling and many others are also not included. Bubbasour11 sprite.pngBubbasour1117

It specifies Mario series characters, the rest you mentioned are crossover characters. --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 14:54, March 28, 2022 (EDT)

Do you think they should also be mentioned? Bubbasour11 sprite.pngBubbasour1117

It makes sense to only list the Mario drivers, since currently Mario Kart Tour focuses on the Mario universe, to the point of removing any branding from the Paper Glider. Characters from other franchises are out of the scope of the game. It will make sense to cite the crossover drivers in the next console Mario Kart game if it will feature crossover elements from other franchises.--Mister Wu (talk) 15:34, March 28, 2022 (EDT)

Dr. Mario is a new character and not just a variant?[edit]

I noticed that Dr. Mario is listed as a new character as opposed to a new variant, whereas Dr. Luigi is indeed a new variant. What is the reason for this? Winstein (talk) 12:16, May 12, 2022 (EDT)

I want to assume it's because Dr. Mario has more of an established identity to him compared to Luigi and the other Dr. characters, especially since Dr. Mario World had so many characters posing as doctors. I'm sure Dr. Peach and Dr. Bowser will be treated in the same way. Sprite of Yoshi's stock icon from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Tails777 Talk to me!Sprite of Daisy's stock icon from Super Smash Bros. None of the four should be handled as new characters, I'd say. The official Twitter account even states "Luigi got his medical license, too, so Dr. Luigi will appear in the second part of the tour!", reinforcing the notion that the Doctor variants are just the characters with a medical license. Well, we could add new Doctor variant just for the fun of classification, i.e. to identify them as power-up variants-like but without the powerup, but I guess variant might do just as well.--Mister Wu (talk) 04:01, May 13, 2022 (EDT)

New section for speculation[edit]

I think there needs to be a section for people to speculate upcoming drivers. --Johnjohn2001 (talk) 13:51, June 6, 2022 (PDT)

No, we don't allow speculation in our articles. If you want to speculate on future game content, join our forums. --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 16:58, June 6, 2022 (EDT)

Shy Guy size class[edit]

I notice that Shy Guy is generally listed as a small-size character, but the two "ninja" versions are listed as medium-size. Is this a mistake on our part or is that how it is in-game? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 22:28, October 7, 2024 (EDT)

Just ran a test: Pink Shy Guy Ninja is indeed larger than regular Shy Guy. So it's not a mistake. Sprite of Yoshi's stock icon from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Tails777 Talk to me!Sprite of Daisy's stock icon from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Interesting, thank you. Are there actually written size-classes in-game? Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 01:11, October 8, 2024 (EDT)
The only real indication of anything is just the size of the driver during gameplay. Nothing is written anywhere on whether they are a small, medium or large sized driver.
