100m Freestyle is an event that appears in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. The object of the event is to swim two lengths of a large pool in the fastest time, racing against other swimmers, with the event taking place at the Tokyo Aquatics Center. Wario and Dr. Eggman can be seen taking part in this event in the game's opening.
Gameplay[edit]
In this event, before the player starts, they charge up power by holding after "Ready" appears on the screen. When "Go" appears on the screen, the player must tilt downwards to start. With the right timing, this gives the character a burst of speed, but doing so too early delays their start. Once in the water, the player must move both s as displayed, depending on the character's stroke:
- Front Crawl: Forwards/backwards alternately (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Shadow)
- Breaststroke: Left/right to sides alternately (Amy, Bowser, Dr. Eggman, Silver, Wario, Wendy)
- Butterfly: Up/down together (Blaze, Knuckles, Waluigi, Donkey Kong, Metal Sonic)
- Dog paddle/Underwater running: Up/down alternately (Sonic, underwater running; Tails and Yoshi, dog paddle)
- Crocodile paddle: Left/right to sides together (Vector)
Once the character reaches the end of the pool, the player must hold to charge power and tilt the left down to kick off the wall of the pool. With the right timing, the character receives a burst of speed and the Super Gauge fills up.
During the race, a bar with the speed of the strokes is displayed above the character. The player must keep their bar filled up to the yellow zone in order to fill the Super Gauge, but if the character goes too fast, they overheat and the Super Gauge is not filled. When the Super Gauge is at least half-full, the player can press to activate their Super Swim, but they must not use it too early as their character will slow down afterward.
