Bobbing Barrel Brawl is the tenth level of Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! It is also the fifth area of Kremwood Forest. It is a riverside level. At the start, Dixie and Kiddy are required to enter an Animal Barrel to transform into Ellie the Elephant for the rest of the level. Bobbing Barrel Brawl alternates between walking segments and river crossing segments. Bobbing Barrel Brawl is the first level where Ellie can draw in water with her trunk and spit them out as water projectiles. A Nibbla follows in the river below Ellie for most of the level. Because of this, Ellie has to throw barrels into the and use them as platforms as a way to safely get across.

The Kongs begin the level near a long ledge that they must drop down to in order to find a DK Barrel and a Booty Bird that hovers over a red Buzz. If they defeat the Booty Bird, the enemy drops a TNT Barrel on the Buzz below it, who guards the letter K. The primates can find a small pool of water with a Nibbla in it ahead of here, and an Auto-Fire Barrel is above it. The barrel can blast them on top of a tall area of land with an Animal Barrel on the edge of it. When the barrel is entered, the Kongs are turned into Ellie the Elephant, who must continue down a few ledges farther ahead of here to reach some Krimps and another small pool of water with a Nibbla in it. Ellie can cross the water without falling into it by using the two barrels that float on top of it. A green Buzz guards one of the barrels, and a group of bananas is behind it that form the letters L and R (or, in the Game Boy Advance version, the letter R alone). After Ellie crosses the water, she reaches a few bananas with the letter O among them. An area of water is ahead of here with a Nibbla and a steel keg in it. The steel keg can only help Ellie cross a portion of the water, but if she defeats a nearby Booty Bird, who flies over the other half of the water, it drops another steel keg that can be used to cross in the water. Immediately after passing this area of water, the pachyderm encounters another pool of water with a Booty Bird and a red Buzz guarding a Bonus Barrel above it. The water can be crossed with the use of a nearby Auto-Fire Barrel. Once Ellie heads down the path following the water, she reaches an additional area of water that contains a Nibbla and two floating barrels, which the elephant can use to cross. However, a green Buzz hovers over the barrels.

Once Ellie reaches the other side of the water, she can find a group of bananas that form the shape of the letter Y (or the letter B in the Game Boy Advance version of the game). There are two red Buzzes ahead of her, and they both guard a TNT Barrel so that she cannot reach it. However, the elephant is able to grab the barrel by using her trunk to suck it towards her. By defeating the Buzzes with the barrel, she can progress farther into the level without being attacked by them. In the area following these wasp-like foes, she can find a Knik-Knak that flies under a bear coin and a barrel that sits next to another area of water. She must throw the barrel into the water to be able to use it as a platform to cross over the water, as a Nibbla can attack here at any moment if she is in the liquid. After Ellie makes her way over this water, she comes up some ledges with a Krimp on them. Once she reaches the highest part of the ground area, she can find a drop ahead of here that she must jump down to in order to reach a lower area with two red Buzzes guarding a steel keg in it. The steel keg can be used to defeat a nearby Koin, who stands under another red Buzz. The level's Star Barrel is located to the right of the Koin on a raised area of ground.

After Ellie passes the Star Barrel, she approaches a pool of water with a trail of bananas leading into it. A steel keg floats in this water, and a DK Barrel wobbles above it. On the other side of the liquid, she can find a steel keg and another water area with a Nibbla in it. She must throw the steel keg into the water in order to use it as a platform and avoid the Nibbla. A barrel floats on the surface of the right half of the water area, and some bananas and the letter N are above it. Once Ellie crosses this section of water, she comes up to a green Buzz, who hovers over a small gap of water. A wider area of water is ahead of it, and it contains a steel keg and a Nibbla. The one steel keg in it is placed in the left half of the water, but there is no barrel in the right half of it to help Ellie cross. However, a Booty Bird, who is orbited by a pair of green Buzzes, can be defeated to make a steel keg drop into the right side of the water. With the two steel kegs, the Animal Friend can cross the water area and progress to another pool of water that contains nothing but a Bonus Barrel at a bottom of it. On the other side of the water, she can find a higher piece of land with two Knik-Knaks walking along it. These foes take flight after they reach the edge of the raised area and hover above the previous body of water. Ahead of here, Ellie can find a steel keg being followed by a pool of water with a green Buzz above it and a Nibbla in it. There is one barrel floating in the surface of the water, but to be able to safely cross the whole pool of water, the pachyderm must throw a steel keg at the left side of it.

Once the water area is passed, Ellie approaches a DK Barrel and a Krimp, which are followed by another water area that the elephant can cross safely by using the barrels floating on the surface of it. A Nibbla patrols the water and can attack her if she enters it. A green Buzz is also above the water, and it guards a Booty Bird, who drops a steel keg into the water if it is defeated. If she continues to the east on the other side of this water, she soon reaches a barrel that is guarded by a red and a green Buzz. She is able to suck the barrel towards her to be able to use it to defeat the green Buzz, who blocks her way onto a raised area of land ahead. Here, she can find a Krimp with the letter G above it, which is followed by a ledge with a pool of water containing a Nibbla next to it. Three barrels float on the surface of it to help the hero cross, but they are guarded by a green Buzz that hovers over them. Another green Buzz is on the other side of the water, and once Ellie passes these foes, she comes up to a No Animal Sign that turns her back into the Kongs when passed. These apes are given a prize in the form of a Banana Bunch after Ellie passes the sign. If they continue ahead from here, they make their way onto a higher area of land with a Level Flag on it. If they raise the flag, they complete the level successfully.

Letter K in Bobbing Barrel Brawl
The letter K
  • K: Located behind the first red Buzz in the level. Ellie must use a DK Barrel to defeat the Booty Bird directly above so that it drops a TNT Barrel on the red Buzz, which also defeats it and reveals the letter K.
  • O: Hovering between an arc of bananas near the Star Barrel.
  • N: The letter N hovers above the center of the second pool of water from the Star Barrel.
  • G: As Ellie approaches the final area of water before the No Animal Sign, she approaches a Krimp and the nearby letter G.

DK Coin[edit]

Right before the Star Barrel, Ellie encounters a Koin and a Steel Barrel, which two red Buzzes are flying up and down on. She must suck the Steel Barrel into her trunk and then go to the right and throw it above Koin, without having it hit a red Buzz above. The Steel Barrel then bounces off the wall and hits Koin from behind, defeating him and rewarding the DK Coin to the Kongs.

Bonus Levels[edit]

The first and second Bonus Levels respectively

Bobbing Barrel Brawl has two Bonus Levels, listed by type:

  • Find the Coin!: Shortly after the letter O, Ellie shoots over a body of water from an Auto-Fire Barrel. After landing, Ellie must turn around to find a Booty Bird flying above a red Buzz who is over the Bonus Barrel. Ellie must shoot a water projectile to the top-left to defeat the Booty Bird, causing it to release a TNT Barrel that also defeats the red Buzz. Ellie can then jump into the Bonus Barrel. In the Bonus Level, there is a Nibbla in the river below. Ellie has 25 seconds to throw barrels into a small body of water so that she can safely get across and collect the Bonus Coin on the other side.
  • Collect 10 Stars!: Not too long after passing the letter N, Ellie enters a pool of water without Nibbla. A Bonus Barrel is at the bottom, which Ellie cannot reach because she cannot swim underwater. To reach it, Ellie must continue on until she finds two yellow Knik-Knaks. Ellie must wait for them to fly into the air over the pool of water, then she must bounce from them to sink low enough into the water and enter the Bonus Barrel. In the Bonus Level, Ellie has 15 seconds to collect 10 stars. She must jump from three Steel Barrels in the water to reach the stars while avoiding a Nibbla in the water. After collecting every star, the Bonus Coin appears on the platform to the right.

Warp Barrel[edit]

When the Kongs reach the first Booty Bird in the level, who is located before Ellie's Animal Barrel, they should use their Team-up move to throw one another into the air to the right of the enemy. They can find a hidden Warp Barrel near this foe, and the barrel can send them to the Level Flag at the end of the level.
