==Design==
In ''[[Paper Mario]]'', Putrid Piranhas resemble larger variants of their standard counterparts, being colored red with white spots and having yellow-stained teeth and a large, lolling tongue. They resemble the Piranha Plants from ''[[Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island]]'', fitting with the other references to the game on the island.

In ''[[Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door]]'' and ''[[Super Paper Mario]]'', they are redesigned to be the same size as their standard counterparts and are now colored yellow with red spots while also having purple teeth, green lips, and a blue tongue.

In ''[[Paper Mario]]'', Putrid Piranhas are found on [[Lavalava Island]]. They are first encountered as mini-bosses in [[Jade Jungle]], where a pair is attacking the orange [[Yoshi]] who is part of the [[Fearsome 5]], and they later appear as common enemies in [[Mt. Lavalava]] itself, where they serve as minions of the [[Lava Piranha]]. The [[Frost Piranha]], which appears later in [[Shiver Snowfield]], is an icy relative of the Putrid Piranha.

In battle, Putrid Piranhas can not only bite [[Mario]], but they are also able to breathe a cloud of poisonous breath on him, this attack doing two points of damage and [[Poison (status effect)|poison]]ing him if he fails to block it. Unlike their regular variant in [[Forever Forest]], they can safely be jumped on without the [[Spike Shield]] badge due to their heads facing forwards.

In ''Super Paper Mario'', Putrid Piranhas live in the [[Land of the Cragnons]], where they will emerge from pipes and attempt to attack with their poisonous breath. While they are exhaling their poisonous gas, Mario can damage them by jumping on their exposed head. They have a high chance of dropping items, especially [[Horsetail]]s, due to the poison status being very deadly if Mario has no items. Uniquely to this game, it is mentioned in their Tattle description that the Putrid Piranhas' poisonous nature is rumored to be a result of pollution, possibly serving as an early hint to the problem of the [[Cragnons]]' littering and explaining why the poisonous plants have come to reside in the Cragnons' land.

Putrid Piranhas appear in volume 26 of ''[[Super Mario-Kun]]''. When a [[White Magikoopa]] ambushes [[Mario]] and his partners in Lavalava Island, he uses Putrid Piranha plants. They bite Mario's head and let out a bad breath, poisoning Mario and [[Goombario]]. The [[Fearsome 5]], however, comes to the rescue and attack the White Magikoopa while sealing the Putrid Piranhas' mouth with tape. One of the Yoshis then defeats the White Magikoopa by using a [[Thunder Rage]] on him.
