Spiny Cheep Cheeps (also formatted as Spiny Cheep-Cheeps), also known as Spiny Cheeps or "Cheep-cheeps," are enemies introduced in Super Mario Bros. 3. They are Cheep Cheeps that most commonly appear with spikes running down their backs, although there has been much variation. Spiny Cheep Cheeps are fast swimmers, and from New Super Mario Bros. Wii onward, they chase Mario in a similar manner to Rip Van Fish from Super Mario World.
Spiny Cheep-Cheeps are blue Cheep-Cheeps with spikes running down their backs. They only appear in one level, 7-4 on Super Mario Bros. 3. Spiny Cheep-Cheeps swim faster than normal Cheep-Cheeps. The spikes don't really make it more dangerous, since Mario and Luigi can't stomp on enemies underwater anyway.

History
They reappear in Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins. This small variety was colored black and acted similar to its Super Mario Bros. 3 counterpart.

Super Mario Bros. 3
Spiny Cheep-Cheeps appear in Super Mario Bros. 3. They are encountered only in World 7-4. They swim faster than normal Cheep-Cheeps, though they can sometimes be seen swimming slowly as well. They also swim both left and right. They can be defeated using Hammer Mario's hammers, Fire Mario's fireballs, or by Invincible Mario. In the original, they are black with a white underside and green lips, and have eyes looking upwards and a visible tooth; in remakes, they are a dull blue with a salmon-colored underside and lips a slightly lighter shade than those of the average Cheep-Cheep, their eyes look downwards, and they have a toothless, circular mouth.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
In the game New Super Mario Bros. Wii Spiny Cheep-Cheeps are purple. They first appear in World 1-5. They are agressive fish that will chase its victim as long as to cause harm using its spikes. They can be frozen by Ice or Penguin Mario, but like all spiked enemies in the game, they will not stay frozen for long.
Spiny Cheep-Cheeps appear in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. They are encountered only in the Turtle Zone. They are flat and an almost eel-like slender design, unlike most appearances, but regularly inflate themselves into spiked balls. Inflated Spiny Cheep-Cheeps can rise upwards only, so it moves towards Mario when deflated and tries to block his path by puffing up and getting in his way. Spiny Cheep-Cheeps can be defeated with fireballs.

Super Mario Galaxy
Spiny Cheep-Cheeps can be defeated if the user has a power-up such as a Fire Mario or a Starman.

Another pufferfish version of this enemy appears in Super Mario Galaxy. They are quite rare, as only two appear, specifically in the Drip Drop Galaxy, hidden in underwater chests. When released, they will puff up and start swimming at a fast pace towards Mario, but only move in a straight line. After a short period, they disappear. Their tail fins resemble balloon nozzles in this game.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Trivia
*A very similar fish appears in Yoshi Touch & Go, as it was blue and spiky, but this unnamed fish's spikes were white, and were always seen jumping. They could only be defeated by smacking them with an egg, and is actually most likely a spiky variant of Flopsy Fish.
Spiny Cheep Cheeps appear in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which introduces their standardized design. They are encountered in World 1-4, World 4-1, and World 4-4, and one Spiny Cheep Cheep appears in a secret area in World 8-4. They travel horizontally while patrolling an area, but quickly chases the player characters upon noticing them. Spiny Cheep Cheeps travel faster than Deep-Cheeps. They can be frozen temporarily from one of Ice or Penguin Mario's Ice Balls. Once a Spiny Cheep Cheep unfreezes, it sports an angrier look on its face, the same one a Deep Cheep has, but behave the same otherwise.

Super Mario Galaxy 2
A Spiny Cheep Cheep appears in Super Mario Galaxy 2. It appears only in the first mission of the Cosmic Cove Galaxy, on the starting planet as Mario makes his way into the Galaxy's titular Cosmic Cove, and then swims at Mario like the ones in its predecessor. It is referred to as a Porcupuffer in the Prima Games guide.

New Super Mario Bros. 2
Spiny Cheep Cheeps appear in New Super Mario Bros. 2. They are first encountered in World 1-5. Spiny Cheep Cheeps retain their behavior and appearance from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, except they now appear angry by default.

New Super Mario Bros. U
Spiny Cheep Cheeps appear in New Super Mario Bros. U. They chase the player characters when they appear onscreen, just like in the game's predecessors.

Spiny Cheep-Cheeps appear in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3. The protagonists encounter them mostly in underwater sections. In "Recycled Koopa," King Koopa uses his Crud Cannon to dump his garbage all over New York City and turn humans into Koopa Zombies, some of the garbage fired by the cannon lands in the East River, mutating a school of fish into Spiny Cheep-Cheeps. Most episodes depict them as red, instead of their game color, and having yellow, sharp teeth.

Yoshi's Story
Spiny Cheep-Cheeps, referred to in English as Spiny Fish, appear in Yoshi's Story. They are magenta with yellow spikes and tail, and they lack pectoral fins. Spiny Fish are depicted as larger than a Cheep Cheep and have more spikes on their body over where their plain underbelly and pectoral fins are normally located. They have red lips and have green irises. They appear only in Lots O'Jelly Fish, where they simply swim back and forth. If a Yoshi eats them, he loses some petals. Their Yoshi's Story artwork is reused as a stamp in Mario Artist: Paint Studio.

Mario Pinball Land
Spiny Cheep-Cheeps (referred to as "little puffers" in Nintendo Power) appear in Mario Pinball Land. They assist Porcupuffer, the boss of the Frosty Frontier Stage. Rather than black or purple, these little puffers have a red and white coloration, retain a dorsal fin akin to a regular Cheep Cheep, and have spikes around their bodies. Defeating a little puffer grants 5,000 points. Any defeated little puffers respawn after Porcupuffer is hit while inflated until it is defeated.

They are blue with white spikes, and are always leaping. They can only be defeated by smacking them with an egg.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions
Spiny Cheep Cheeps appear in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions. They are encountered in the Seabed and replace both Cheep Cheeps and Puffer-Cheeps. However, they have identical behavior, first appearing as plain, purple Cheep Cheep and shedding its "mohawk" in favor of retractable spikes when stomped. Damaging it again reverts it into its previous form.

Super Mario Party
A Spiny Cheep Cheep is one of the possible guesses in Absent Minded, a minigame in Super Mario Party.

Dr. Mario World
Spiny Cheep Cheeps appear in Dr. Mario World as assistants. In stage mode, they have a chance of triggering a rapid skill meter increase, in which it originally increases the skill meter by 300% more than usual per elimination made, but was changed to increase the skill meter by an extra point for every elimination made. This stage mode effect stacks with Spiny's effect if both activate. In versus mode, they grant a chance that one virus is eliminated if the player is about to lose, which only happens once per match.

LEGO Super Mario
Spiny Cheep Cheeps appear as collectible figures in Character Packs - Series 2 for LEGO Super Mario. In the official app, their name is misspelled as Spinny Cheep Cheeps.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie
An illustration of a Spiny Cheep Cheep can be seen on a storefront sign in the teaser poster for Illumination's The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
