The Super Luigi series' tale usually differs from Luigi's rendition of his story. For example, in the Jazzafrazz Town section of the story, Luigi and his partner, Hayzee, state that in Hayzee's stage production, Luigi played the part of grass, while the books say that Luigi played the part of an earth spirit. The books make the stories told in Super Luigi more romanticized than they really are. Additionally, the books add a few details to the end Luigi does not mention, such as the Chestnut King being Princess Eclair's fiancé and Minister Crepe being the real villain, the latter of which is only vaguely mentioned by Luigi as a demon appearing after the Chestnut King's defeat.

The final revelation of Crepe having Luigi collect the Marvelous Compass pieces for evil matches the plot of the main game, being the Crystal Stars are used to awaken the Shadow Queen. Coincidentally, in both cases, the main villains end up manipulating Mario and Luigi by posing as allies (although in Mario's case it was more literal due to Professor Frankly being disabled and replaced by the time Mario got all the Crystal Stars).

The ending to the Super Luigi series also bears parallels to the Super Mario anime film Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen! In the film, after Mario defeats Bowser and rescues Peach, the dog who has been traveling with the brothers is revealed to be a prince who is engaged to Peach, but was transformed into a dog by Bowser. The spell was broken after Mario defeated Bowser, and Mario leaves the Mushroom Kingdom with Luigi, dejected. The differences between the film's ending and Super Luigi's ending is that Haru was an ally to the Mario Bros. while the Chestnut King was the monster that Luigi's end goal was to defeat.
