Talk:Arrow Switch
Is this even an official name? And does this relate to Luigi's Mansion at all, as the article claims? I'm pretty sure the gravity things in Luigi's Mansion aren't the same.
I seriously doubt it. If anyone has a Prima guide, please check the pages about the levels this object appears in and see if it has an official name.--Knife (talk) 19:33, 11 February 2011 (EST)
Merge with gravity switch[edit]

Move SMG and SPP to gravity switch, split off LM info 1-4-0
In Super Paper Mario (SPM), there is a block-like switch that, when struck, changes the direction of gravity from one plane to another. It is called じゅうりょくスイッチ (Jūryoku Suitchi, "gravity switch") in Japan and the gravity switch in the game's English localization.
In Super Mario Galaxy (SMG), there is a spinnable switch that, when struck, changes the direction of gravity from one plane to another. It is called 重力スイッチ (Jūryoku Suitchi, "gravity switch") in Japan and the gravity switch in the Prima Guide, but we currently categorize it separately under the internal filename "Arrow Switch" on Super Mario Wiki.
Given the shared Japanese name, English name, and mechanical function of these objects, I feel like it would make more sense to categorize them under one article, which is the desired outcome of this proposal.
The Luigi's Mansion (LM) switch currently lumped under Arrow Switch is mechanically a bit different. It is more passive than most switches in the Super Mario franchise - standing on this tile automatically shifts the player from the floor to the ceiling and vice versa. No other input is needed. In the Nintendo Power guide for LM, it is passively referred to as a "circular tile" (page 53), and while this is not quite like a proper localization, there is no evidence that it is called an "Arrow Switch" or that it is accurate to lump it with the SMG object. There are examples of a true Super Mario switches that are triggered just by walking on top of it. For example, the Trample Switch in Super Mario 3D World and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker works this way and is currently lumped in the P Switch article. However, in my view, it is not unreasonable for the LM circular tile to have its own dedicated article.
EDIT: As discussed below, there is a comparable object in Super Princess Peach (SPP) that will be incorporated into the proposal as well.
I offer four options:
- Support one article by merging Arrow Switch with gravity switch (and incorporate SPP information)
- Support two articles through:
- moving the SMG Arrow Switch info to gravity switch (as well as incorporate SPP information) and
- creating a "circular tile" article for the LM Arrow Switch info
- Support four articles by creating a new one for the SPP switch and splitting Arrow Switch into two: one for the LM tile, and one for the SMG info. The SPM article is untouched in this option. Even if these objects are mechanically similar and two share the same name in multiple languages, they are not one-to-one with each other and were likely conceptualized independently from one another.
- Leave them as is.
I hope this proposal is clear. Please let me know if I did not.

Merge Arrow Switch with gravity switch[edit]
- Nintendo101 (talk): Primary preference.
Move SMG Arrow Switch info to gravity switch, update it to include SPP switch info, and move LM Arrow Switch info to its own article[edit]
- Nintendo101 (talk): Secondary preference.
- Hewer (talk) Per proposal, connecting the Luigi's Mansion switch to the others seems a bit random.
- MegaBowser64 (talk) Per all of yall (collectively)
- LinkTheLefty (talk) This makes sense. The Luigi's Mansion object just doesn't seem to have much going for it here.
Split Arrow Switch into two articles, create a new one for the SPP switch, and leave the SPM gravity switch article alone[edit]
Leave them as is[edit]
Comments[edit]
The block type is also in Super Princess Peach in Bowser's Vista, if I recall properly. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 16:50, April 22, 2024 (EDT)
- There's also one in the last level of New Super Mario Bros., right? LinkTheLefty (talk) 17:16, April 22, 2024 (EDT)
- Something like that, I remember there being screwy gravity there, but not the catalyst for it. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 13:29, April 23, 2024 (EDT)
- Ah, it was actually a ? Switch hidden in regular-looking Brick Blocks (that shake differently when a Thwomp lands) and not a gravity switch in New Super Mario Bros. Super Princess Peach does indeed have a very similar arrow block object, though. Can that be thrown in there? LinkTheLefty (talk) 14:27, April 23, 2024 (EDT)
- I was always puzzled why it wasn't in with the SPM object since they're functionally the same. Go ahead. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:28, April 23, 2024 (EDT)
