I know this is a nit-pick, but it seems to me that her shirt is to teal to call blue; just a thought, though. TheWanderingTaco.

How is this their niece? Most likely cousin.

So the Polygon article says it is, but it was never quoted by the directors. The directors are quoted, specifically Horvath, mentioning only of Uncle Arthur, Uncle Tony and Aunt Marie. Only Polygon then mentions the niece and grandfather, not a quote from the directors. I think most likely this is Mario and Luigi's cousin, and it seems more evident that it's true. Mario and Luigi are the only siblings, there would need to be another sibling that has a daughter for her to be considered their niece. She is most likely the daughter of Uncle Arthur and Aunt Marie as they are all sitting next to each other at the dinner table. The only way she is a niece to anyone is Papa Mario and Uncle Tony.

I think it's more likely a cousin, but the text on Mario's Family states that "it is common in the United States to refer to one's first cousin once removed by terms such as "(second) nephew" and "(second) niece" for the sake of convenience." Now that the movies' out, I noticed a small detail. There is a photo of just Arthur, Marie and the girl right under the photo of Mario playing tennis in the dining room, which pretty much would imply that they are father, mother and daughter. It can be seen right when Aunt Marie give a smack on Uncle Arthur's head for making fun of Mario, which seems kinda something a wife would do. Later right before the Mushroom Kingdom gets warped into Brooklyn another scene of the family is shown, and Aunt Marie takes away the girl's phone, something I can see a mother do.
