- New Super Mario Bros. (pictured) was the first original side-scrolling platformer in the Super Mario series released since 1992's Super Mario Land 2 - 6 Golden Coins, helping revive the 2D Super Mario platformers.
- According to Takashi Tezuka, the games in the Yoshi franchise do not take place in the Mushroom Kingdom.
- The setting of Yoshi's Story is a pop-up storybook based on a Choose Your Own Adventure book.
- Many musical tracks in the New Super Mario Bros. series incorporate the sound effect "Paah" that enemies and on-screen objects may briefly react to. These sounds are usually vocal samples that punctuate the background music at the end of a melodic phrase.
