Variant of Bandit

Coin Bandits[1] are enemies in the Yoshi series. They are red-colored variants of Bandits that carry Red Coins on their heads. Unlike normal Bandits, which chase after the Yoshis, Coin Bandits run away in an attempt to prevent the Yoshis from stealing their Red Coins.

History

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3

Bandit sprite from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Coin Bandits make their first appearance in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island as uncommon enemies. They appear only in the levels Marching Milde's Fort and The Cave Of The Bandits. Additionally, in the remake, they also appear in Mystery of the Castle?. They slowly walk around while occasionally turning their heads to look in both directions. When they detect a Yoshi, they start running away in the opposite direction. They never stop running and can jump over obstacles, even continuing to flee if Yoshi approaches from the direction they are heading toward. If there is a pit and the Coin Bandit cannot jump over it to continue running, it will jump into the pit, disappearing along with the Red Coin. While fleeing, they are harmless, and Yoshi can pass through them from the sides. There are several ways for Yoshi to obtain the Red Coin. Jumping on a Coin Bandit causes the coin to fly forward while the Coin Bandit behaves like a normal Bandit afterward. Yoshi can also use its tongue on the Coin Bandit itself, causing the Red Coin to fly toward Yoshi while the Coin Bandit chases after Yoshi. Throwing an egg or a watermelon seed at a Coin Bandit also knocks the Red Coin loose, causing it to fly toward Yoshi while pushing the Coin Bandit backward. If Yoshi is far enough away and the Coin Bandit has not yet noticed it, the Coin Bandit will not immediately begin chasing after Yoshi when hit, and will only start pursuing once Yoshi gets close enough. Yoshi can also directly grab the Red Coin with its tongue without alerting the Coin Bandit, leaving it to wander around like a normal Bandit. If the Coin Bandit is already fleeing and Yoshi grabs the Red Coin with its tongue, the Coin Bandit continues running away unless it is stomped on or hit. Coin Bandits can be defeated with a Ground Pound, three jumps, six watermelon seeds, or an Anywhere POW. Defeating one causes the Red Coin to fly into the air. Once Yoshi steals the Red Coin from a Coin Bandit, it does not respawn.

Yoshi's New Island

Coin Bandits return in Yoshi's New Island, appearing exclusively in Bandit Valley. They appear walking forward and occasionally changing direction. When they detects Yoshi, they begins running and jumping away. Unlike in the previous game, if Yoshi gets in the Coin Bandit’s path while it is fleeing, it turns around and runs in the opposite direction instead. The first Coin Bandit appears near the end of the level. Unlike other Coin Bandits, this one is more persistent, fleeing from Yoshi throughout the entire section of the level. It disappears if it reaches the end of the level and passes the Goal Ring. Five more Coin Bandits appear in a secret area, where Yoshi must defeat them before they jump into the pit at the right. To do so, the area contains Watermelons which Yoshi can use to spit seeds at the Coin Bandits, making their Red Coins fall. If a Coin Bandit notices Yoshi and then goes off-screen, it does not respawn. As in the previous game, once a Coin Bandit starts running, Yoshi can pass through it from the sides; however, touching the Red Coin causes Yoshi to steal it, making the Coin Bandit chase after Yoshi. Throwing an egg directly at a Red Coin instantly gives it to Yoshi, after which the Coin Bandit wanders around like a normal Bandit. Hitting the Coin Bandit itself with an egg causes the Red Coin to drop in place and briefly leaves the Bandit dizzy. Ground-pounding nearby briefly stuns Coin Bandits.
